The SSID of a wireless network is determined by the wireless access point (AP) that you are using. Some AP's have a label on the bottom that give the SSID and Key for that particular network. Some AP's broadcast the SSID and that can be read off the air when you attempt to connect. Those are the 'available' networks that show up in the wireless network list. If you are trying to connect to a network that is not your own, you need to get the connection data, including the SSID and network key, from the person providing the network. There are open networks that broadcast their SSID and don't require any key, but those networks are not secure and data transmitted on them can be stolen.

  Download a program that will scan your network for hidden SSIDs. Many free utilities are capable of doing this, including inSSIDer, NetStumbler and or Kismet (see Resources). Only inSSIDer will show the hidden SSID. NetStumbler and Kismet will find networks with hidden SSIDs and display most of their information, but list the SSID as "Unknown."

  Run the program and click the "Scan Now" or "Scan" button. The program will scan your wireless network for all signals coming from other networks, both hidden and broadcasting their SSIDs.

  View the list of networks that appears when the scan concludes. All networks within range of yours will appear on the list. An SSID is the name of a wireless local area network (WLAN). All wireless devices on a WLAN must employ the same SSID in order to communicate with each other. The SSID on wireless clients can be set either manually, by entering the SSID into the client network settings, or automatically, by leaving the SSID unspecified or blank. A network administrator often uses a public SSID, that is set on the access point and broadcast to all wireless devices in range. Some newer wireless access points disable the automatic SSID broadcast feature in an attempt to improve network security.
SSIDs are case sensitive text strings. The SSID is a sequence of alphanumeric characters (letters or numbers). SSIDs have a maximum length of 32 characters.

The SSID simply put is the name of a wireless network for example, when your connect to a network on your laptop the name that pops up that is the networks SSID

Wireless networks can be set up in stealth, meaning that they do not transmit their SSID and thus the user wishing to connect must know the SSID exactly.

I am guessing this question is in relation to connecting a Nintendo Wii to the internet? If so just enter the network name for the SSID as it appears on your computer and the password and relevant information.

SSID access points continuously broadcast radio signals which are received by client machines if enabled. Based on the automatic or manual configuration, the client can connect to the access point. A SSID is generally 32 bit long, but when displayed to the user, it is projected into a human readable ASCII format. Multiple access points can possibly share same SSID if they are for the same wireless network. Many wireless access points support broadcasting multiple SSIDs, permitting the formation of Virtual Access Points. Such Virtual Access Points partition a single physical access point into many logical access points, each of which can have a special set of security and network settings.
SSID Security Issues

Every user of the network must configure the SSID into their system. If the network administrator seeks to lock a user out of the network, the administrator must change the SSID of the network, which will require reconfiguration of the SSID on every network node. Some 802.11 NICs allow you to configure several SSIDs at one time.

Every time a client connects to the wireless network, the SSID is communicated in plain text format, which can easily be sniffed by eavesdropper using sniffing applications like Kismet. Hence, additional security techniques are required to be implemented in order to enhance the wireless security.

SSID is basically the name of your network. A lot of people's networks are named the generic "Netgear" or "Quest_(random number)", but some people like me have a custom set network name.

To find your SSID, type in the address bar 192.168.0.1 exactly, no .com or www. Once you arrive to the network page, search around for either SSID or network name, as their basically the same. You can also try to find it be searching around a computer that's connected to the network. You should be able to find it in the system tray, as pictured here.


Hover over the circled icon, and it should say the name of your network. That's what SSID means.

NOTE: If you're trying to connect to your network by wireless connection with the Wii, try the "Search for an Access Point" option and see if your network appears. If it doesn't, then try entering your SSID.

go in your dlinks settings it by default always set to the routers name, you computer should detect the router in an area of networks, if the update is looking for an SSID # look on the sticker on the router it should say it there
