Hard disk Drive

I have a HP Pavillion dv1000 notebook which is two years old. HP diagnostics stated the hard drive is shot and needs to be replaced at a cost of $496.00 Is there any way that I can run another check to see if the hard drive is indeed in need of replacement.

I ran the scan disc program. It does not show any problems. The computer itself is not making any type of strange or out of the ordinary noises. I did have a problem when I went to do a download of windows pack3. My system crashed and I lost all data on the computer. Seems I have been having problems ever since. I also thought the price they were asking was outragous.

Wow! I'm not sure where the $496 number came from, but that's literally insane! You can purchase a 120GB notebook drive from NewEgg for $49!

If you can get into Windows, right click on your "C" drive and go to Properties, Tools, Error Checking. You can have Windows scan the disk and automatically fix errors. Personally, I turn the "auto" option off, as I want to see what damage (if any) is done ..but if you think the drive is really bad off, or don't care as long as it's fixed, then check that option.

If you can't get into Windows, you can have a local PC repair guy test the drive outside your tower, using an external drive (or a friend can do this as well, using the "Error Checking" I mentioned above).

Generally, if the drive isn't making clanking sounds or making metallic noises, it's probably "fixable".
If you MUST replace the drive, shop around first and don't assume that because one person quotes you a price, that's what you have to pay. Replacing a hard drive is one of the easiest upgrades to perform on a laptop. If you spend over $100 to do this (including having someone do it for you), then you are nuts :)

Hope this helps - please remember to rate :)

Hello i have a dell ispiron 1545 and when i boot it up it says that the hard disk drive not found a there is a loud clicking on the left side of the computer. I ran diagnostics and it came back as an...

OK, the loud clicking sound is the Hard Drive. The ball bearings in the drive moved, and the headers are not alining to the disk.

Short answer, you need to replace the hard drive, yours is dead. I am sorry.

You can try puting the hard drive in the freezer for 2 hours, and hooking it back up, just to get the data off the drive. This doesn't always work, but in most cases, it does. Remember to put the drive in a plasic bag. Wish you the best of luck.

HI. I RECENTLY got a hp proLIANT ML 330 G3 server. It did not come with any OS.. IT had only cd drive.. so i burned SERVER 2003 IN usb and i want to server to boot from usb.. when even i switched it on it...

I am sorry to advise you I have had the exact same issue with a ML330 G3, and it doesnt support USB boot , There are 2 work arounds, 1 is to burn 2003 to a CD as opposed to a DVD and then boot from the standard drive, the other option is to swap out the internal IDE CD Drive to a IDE DVD drive, these are pretty cheap to purchase and easy to fit, the key to fitting is that the ribbon that fits in the back of the drive has a stripe down one side, The side with the Stripe always plugs in nearest to the Power plug that you also plug into the drive.

If this helps, please can you provide positive feedback

Reformatting toshiba portable hard drive for mac, since the one i have says for windows pc

Note: I'm assuming you have a working mac; if you don't, then post back to this solution with that information.

1. Connect the external hard drive to your mac.

2. Open the system drive, usually titled "Macintosh HD." Open Applications, then Utilities and double click the "Disk Utility" program to open it. A window will open giving a list of all the drives currently mounted on the computer.

3. Select the external hard drive that needs to be formatted on the left.
4. Click on the "Erase" tab to the right of the list of drives. The window will now display the options for erasing the hard drive and formatting it to work on the Macintosh computer.
5. Select the Volume Format from the pop-up list. In most cases it's best to leave it at "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as this is the default. This setting is the best option for running Mac OS X.
6. Name the hard drive. Type a name for the disk in the field where it asks for the name. This name will always appear when the disk is mounted on a Macintosh computer.
7. Click the erase button. A window will open asking to verify the erase procedure. Click the erase button in this window to start the process of erasing the disk. Once the process is complete, the drive will appear with the name it was given on the left side of the window with the list of drives and on the desktop of the Macintosh computer.

Good luck, please post back to this solution if you have any difficulties, and thanks for using FixYa.

I have a hp pavillion dv4 2126 tx laptop with windows 7 os. i need to load fedora or ubunto for the same. i want to know how to do it without disturbing windows os and my files.

First you will need to partition the hard drive. This can be done from within Windows 7 using the Disk Management utility. You may access this by right clicking on "Computer" and going to manage. You will then click on disk management to the left in the navigation pane. From there you will see a listing of your hard disks and their existing partitions (if any). You now need to right click on the partition you would like to shrink in order to make space for your Linux install. The minimum recommended amount is 15GB, but if you have more to spare, I highly recommend utilizing it.
Once the partition is shrunk you will have some unallocated space that the Linux install can take advantage of. You now simply need to boot from your Linux install CD and choose this unallocated space as the install point.
There is a video and an article I will reference that should help as well.

I can't install windows XP on my Acer Aspire T650 beacause it can't find any hard disk sata

The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

I turned my computer on and it says " no bootable devices -- strikef1 to retry , f2 for set up utility , f5 to run on board diagnostics

Is there a floppy disk/USB drive/Pendrive inserted in the machine? Sounds like its trying to boot from some other devide rather than your Hard drive. If this doesnt help you hard drive could be faulty.

for Windows 2003 (and XP), you can't create an Emergency Repair Disk, but you can however create an ASR (Automated System Recovery). This allows you to restore the hard drive to the state it was previously should it crash.

To create the ASR, go to Start > Run and type 'ntbackup.exe' (without the quotes) and when the wizard starts, click on the 'ASR' button. You will need to create a name and destination for the ASR and this will normally be over 2GB, so a DVD backup or a separate partition on your hard drive would be best but you will also need a floppy disk to complete the process if I remember correctly.

More info on how the ASR works can be read at the MS Technet article:
