Question about Smeg WD16BA Front Load Washer / Dryer

1 Answer

Burning smell (electric), continued...

Thank you for your prompt response Tresil, appreciated!
May I ask for a little clarification though?

1) I looked through the Smeg spare parts website, and 'suppressor' and 'capacitor' are separate items. Is that so, and are they both located in the same place (where the mains cable goes, as you said)?

2) I'm not sure from what you're saying whether I should replace the suppressor and/or capacitor, or fix it some other way. Please advise...

3) I have attached pictures of the inside and outside of the mains box, for your convenience. Hope they help...

May I remind you also that the machine is still otherwise functional...
Thank you very much for being so kind, I look forward to resolving this with your help!

Kind regards,

In the second picture, the part shown is the suppressor - looks ok as far as i can see and if it is faulty, the damage is usually obvious.
suggesting the suppressor was an educated guess - if machine works ok then just soldier on. the other thought i had was the neon itself burnt out and this will not affect the working of the machine

I have a haier washer, its clicking when the drum is turning then near the end of the wash it starts smelling of burning then trips the fuse. can you help please thank you

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

I would suggest that there is little that you can do other than call out a service engineer promptly. Other than that there doesn't appear to be something simple which we could advise you to do to cure the problem. Sorry ;-0(

Burning smell

There's a number of reasons to smell burning after a washing machine cycle. It's a 220V appliance, so if it short's out it will cause problems. It's more likely the motor being overloaded making it hot and causing the electrical burning smell, or a short that's overheating something electrical. Check to see if the belt that spins the whole barrel is melted or worn anywhere. Inspect the wiring that's attached to the system that engages spin, which is different from agitation by the big tower.
If these both check out, an trip to the Maytag Man might have to fix overloading motors or relays, or switches, if anything turns up in your search for the source of the electrical smoke. Ozone is what you are smelling, FYI.

I replaced the coupler now it smells like its burning ...why?

It may take a little time for the coupler to wear in. If the smell continues there is probably a motor problem like the windings may be going bad but the only way to know for sure is to do some electrical testing with a volt/ohm meter and the wiring diagram located within the appliance.

The Kenmore Model 70 Smells Electrical Burning,

Hi..

You need to unplug the washer. Locate the source of the odor then read the instructions in the related section. You need to open the back cover, Check the parts which is spark, and become faulty, there is a short circuit, that become loose contact.

There is a strong electrical burning smell

Burning smell was actually coming from the main incoming power supply to the house, not the washing machine. Problem solved.

Machine won't spin

Motor part number is 8529936 about $200.00 any appliance parts store can order it. You can replace it your self. Also replace the direct drive coupling when you change the motor.part number 285753. Be sure to inspect your wiring harness and check the motor wire continuity before you put $200.00 into it.

Burning (electrical) smell and other symptoms...

suppressor very unlikely to be the source of problems and would not explain the motor clicking
i think the main problem may be a faulty motor.remove the electrical connection and take the motor out - just held in by bolts - and examine carefully the motor commutator - the segments of copper the brushes run on.
i think you may find one or more segments lifted which would explain the clicking noise and maybe the burning smell. it would also explain the lack of motor rotation - just coincidence it happened on dry.

Burning smell (electrical) from my washing machine

possibly the suppressor capacitor. take lid off and trace where mains input is connected and that is the suppressor. they sometimes go pop
other possibility is the neon burnt out

Burn Smell (electrical) from my GE WPSE4200A0WW

We have the same problem, and found out the the electric motor is running very hot. Replacing the motor seam to cure the problem, but the motor is not inexpensive. $200 to $350.
