Run diagnostics first on the ignition on without cranking, the timing belt snap would give you a good idea with a loud bang and engine is gone. If diagnostics comes with immobilizer error than happy days, a smart fellow can program it, but if it comes with crank position sensor than you need to take out the cover for the timing belt or you can actually do this before diagnostics and if the belt is still there, run the first step than.

It was 96 outside and temp gauge went from normal to hot lights started coming on then I lost all power. What could this be

Your vehicle ran hot and probably did damage to the engine. Probably blown headgasket and/or cracked head. A compression test will confirm this.

My 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT has a flashing and sometimes a Solid SES light and runs rough

Usually with the newer vehicles when it starts to run rough or idle poorly it's time for a tune up, that will also make the check engine light come on on some vehicles, it needing an oil change can also cause the light

2008 pt cruiser - check engine light came on, within minutes it started to "power down" and and died. Won't start. What could cause this? BTW have changed spark plugs, camshaft sensore, cranks

My PT did that when my timing belt broke. It cost $500.00 to replace it. If it is broken, be ready to have some motor work done. I had to have to values replaced at a cost of $900.00. If your timing belt is not broken then check the alternator and battery. I was riding down the road and my PT shut all the way down and would not start. I had to leave it beside the road. It was my alternator. It gave me no warning.

Whenever the murano is idle and the engine is in neutral after a time it shuts off and gives a hard start It alo does this in traffic and especially when it gets hot it just shuts off.

the next time it shuts down check to see if fuel pump is running. if not. check the fuel pump relay, it may be getting hot and shutting down pump. a malfunctioning temperature sensor will often send incorrect information to the vehicle's on-board computer. As a result, when the vehicle reaches a normal operating speed the sensor may relay an incorrect signal to the computer that the engine is overheating resulting in engine shutdown. The vehicle will not be able to start again until the engine has completely cooled and will need to have the sensor replaced in order to prevent the recurrence of the problem. in some cases a bad thermostat will cause this problem also. good-day !

I have a 2004 kia sorento. while driving down the interstate at 75mph, i hear a ticking noise. all my gauges read normal. a minute later the ticking gets louder and the check engine light comes on. i...

Does the car have a normal oil level on the dipstick? The behavior is consistent with a broken timing belt except for the part about the temperature gauge going to the top which would indicate overheating or a faulty gauge.

Keyless remote wont work, vehicle completely shut down

Hi Russell,

Absolutely no power? No dome light? No head lights? Nothing?
When you step on the brake pedal, no brake lights?

If true, start at the source and pop the hood.

This is going to be a bit of back and forth dialogue. I'll ask some questions and you get me the answers. That way we can get to the root of the problem. To save time, I'll ask multiple questions at a time. Here goes.

  • Check the battery. Is it still there? (Valid question with no evidence of power)
  • Are the terminal clamps tight?
  • Are the terminals clean and free of corrosion?
  • Are all the belts in place and tight? (pay special attention to alternator)
  • If you have a voltmeter. test the voltage at the battery terminals. It should be +12.5VDC.
Try getting a jump, when the cables are attached does anything light up?
Does it turn over and start?
Does it do anything?

Comment me back with your findings

You have probably spun a rod bearing. These engines do not like running with low/no oil.

1997 montero sport 3000 24valve v6

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.
