When you <a href="http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com/forgot-windows-password.html">forgot Windows password</a>, did you feel confused that why you cannot reset the forgotten Windows password via standard user or guest account? The answer is very simple as the standard user and guest accounts do not have rights to reset the password of another accounts. Within the three types of Windows user accounts, only the administrator account allows you to change another accounts' password. So if you want to <a href="http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com/reset-windows-password.html">reset Windows password</a> of another accounts, you need to change your account type to administrator firstly. Moreover, if you need to give a user more access to perform tasks like installing software or other system changes, you also need to change your account type.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Steps to Change Windows User Account Type</span><br /><br />1. Log on your Windows machine with an administrator account.<br /><br />2. Click "Start" - "Control Panel" - "User Accounts and Family Safety" - "User Accounts".<br /><br />3. Click "Manage another account".<br /><br />4. Click on the user account that you would like to change its type.<br /><br />5. On the following window, click "Change the account type" from on the left pane.<br /><br />6. Select Administrator and click "Change Account" Type to finish your operation.<br /><br />Since the standard user account turn to an administrator one, you can reset Windows password of another accounts or do other operations without limitation through control panel.<br /><br />You can change standard user to administrator only when you can log on your computer with an available administrator account. If you forgot Windows password of all administrator accounts, you'll need to reset Windows administrator password even you can access your computer with a standard user or guest account.<br /><br />Software Windows Login Recovery allows you to create a password reset disk with blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive. With the disk you can reset Windows password to be empty in few minutes. With it, you'll never be worried when you forgot Windows password. All you need to do is just three steps.<br /><br />1. Download and install Windows Login Recovery.<br /><br />2. Burn a password reset disk with a blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive.<br /><br />3. By the way, you can reset any account's password with this software. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Something about Windows User Accounts</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Administrator:</span> A administrator account is intended for someone who can make system wide changes to the computer, install software, and access all non-private files on the computer. Forgot Windows Password - How to Reset the Password without Admin Rights?

<span style="font-weight: bold;">Problem:</span> "<a href="http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com/forgot-windows-password.html">Forgot Windows password</a>? How I can reset it without admin rights? On my Windows 7 machine, I created 2 accounts. One is an account with admin rights, and the other one is a limited account (standard user account). Now Windows is not recognizing my password for the administrator account. Can I reset the administrator password via the standard user account? Or is there any other way to reset the forgotten administrator account password? Please note I never created a password reset disk for the administrator account."<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Solution:</span> As for the above question, the answer is no as users cannot reset another account password via a standard user account. In my opinion, the most effective and simple approach case is to use a powerful Windows password recovery tool like Windows Login Recovery. With this password recovery tool at hand, you easily reset administrator, standard user and guest passwords by yourself if you forgot Windows password. Besides, it is very safe; no data will be lost after <a href="http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com/reset-windows-password.html">Windows password reset</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">How to reset forgotten Windows password?</span><br /><br />If you decide to use Windows Login Recovery when you forgot Windows password, you need to find an accessible computer, download and install the program in it. Once it is set up, run it and burn a password reset disk with a blank CD/DVD. Then you follow the instructions below to reset forgotten Windows password with the burned CD/DVD.<br /><br />Step 1. Insert the burned CD/DVD in your locked computer.<br /><br />Step 2. Press F2, Delete or F10 to enter BIOS Setup when the computer is booting.<br /><br />Step 3. Set CD-ROM as the first boot device in BIOS.<br /><br />Note: You could click here to view how to set the first boot device in BIOS. The computer will restart automatically after saving your BIOS settings. And you'll be able to reset forgotten Windows password under DOS.<br /><br />Step 4. Enter the NO. of your Windows installation path to display all its account user names.<br /><br />Step 5. Enter the NO. of a specified User Name to remove its account password, then enter y to confirm and continue your operation.<br /><br />Step 6. Enter n to finish your operation when the selected windows account password is removed.<br /><br />Note: If you want to remove another Windows account password, please enter y. And you'll repeat the previous steps to reset another account password.<br /><br />Step 7. Remove the burned CD/DVD and press any key to restart your computer when you enter n to finish your operation.<br /><br />Now the operation is finished. Windows will not ask you to enter a password when you log on to your computer. Don't you think it is easy? Never feel frustrated when you forgot Windows password with this method.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Why cannot use standard user account?</span><br /><br />Are you confused that why you cannot reset the administrator password by using the standard user account? Well, you need to learn what a standard user account is.<br /><br />According to Microsoft, a standard user account is to let a person use most of the capabilities of the computer, but permission from an administrator is required if you want to make changes that affect other users or the security of the computer.<br /><br />When you use a standard account, you can use most programs that are installed on the computer, but you can't install or uninstall software and hardware, delete files that are required for the computer to work, or change settings on the computer that affect other users. If you're using a standard account, some programs might require you to provide an administrator password before you can perform certain tasks. So if you forgot Windows password, you could not reset the password by using a standard user account.

Forgot my password

Its a bit of a read
Passwords add a level of security to your computer. When sharing a computer with others, your customized settings, computer programs, and system resources are more secure when you assign a password to your logon name or user account name. The steps to perform this task differ depending on whether your computer is a member of a network domain or is part of a workgroup (or is a stand-alone computer). My computer is on a domain You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure. Open User Accounts in Control Panel. On the Users tab, click the name of the user whose password you want to change, and then click Reset Password. In New password and Confirm new password, type the new password, and then click OK. Notes You can change passwords only for local computer accounts, such as guest, administrator, or accounts you create for your computer. You cannot change your network logon password in User Accounts. To change your own password, press CTRL ALT DELETE and then click Change Password. My computer is not on a domain If no password has been assigned to the user's account, a password will need to be created before it can be changed. For information about creating a password, click Related Topics. The steps to perform this task differ depending on the type of user account you have. If you have a computer administrator account Open User Accounts in Control Panel. Click your account name. Click Change my password. In Type your current password, type your current password. In Type a new password and Type the new password again to confirm, type your new password. You can also enter descriptive or meaningful text in Type a word or phrase to use as a password hint to help you remember your password. Click Change Password. If you have a limited account Open User Accounts in Control Panel. Click Change my password. In Type your current password, type your current password. In Type a new password and Type the new password again to confirm, type the new password. You can also enter descriptive or meaningful text in Type a word or phrase to use as a password hint to help you remember your password. Click Change Password. Notes A user with a computer administrator account can create and change passwords for all users on the computer. Users with limited accounts can create and change their own passwords, as well as create their own password hints. If a user with a computer administrator account changes the password for another user, that user will lose all EFS-encrypted files, personal certificates, and stored passwords for Web sites or network resources. Notes To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts. For more information about user accounts, click Related Topics. Related Topics

Forgot Administrative password

I got the following from the windows help and support:

OPTION 1
Using a password reset disk is the best solution.
  1. If you have typed the wrong password, you'll get a message that says your user name or password is incorrect. When this message appears, click OK.
  2. Click Reset password, and then follow the instructions.
OPTION 2

If there is another administrator account on the computer, that administrator can change the password for the account you can't remember the password for. If you do this, however, you will lose access to any encrypted files, encrypted e‑mail messages, and passwords stored on this account. If you don't have encrypted files or stored passwords, then this option will work for you

OPTION 3

If you don't have a password reset disk or another administrator account, you won't be able to reset the password. If there are no other user accounts on the computer, you won't be able to log on to Windows. In this case, you will need to re-install Windows.
