Question about Toshiba SD-4700 DVD Player

Open Question

Toshiba SD-K760SU Spindle motor actuation failure

This seemed to show the same symptoms as the one that suggested the ribbon cable problem.  Insert and "Load" Then "No" on the readout.  I reinserted the ribbon cable and then tried to load the Disc.  It seemed to exhibit the same malfunction and code.  But as before it seemed to try to spin up and not succeed.  I gave the top spindle a little nudge and it spun up and started playing.  What needs replacing here?  The spindle motor unit? Or a single small component somewhere? And what is the number of the unit in order to get it. martindsloan@yahoo.com

I found that the ribbon cable from the DVD tray to circuit board located in the middle of the chassis was loose. It only seems to be wedged into place. I inserted the cable back in and made sure it was wedged into place securely. I have had to do this twice now.

SOURCE: Will not play all DVD's

Try a dvd lens cleaning kit. This may help.
It could also be the laser itself. Newer DVDs require a very strong laser to read them.Older ones do not.
You can pick up a cleaning kit at Wal mart for about 10 dollars.Hope this helps

Keyboard ribbon connector on the motherboard

Cut a piece of sturdy clear plastic packaging material (like memory packaging, etc.) or extra ribbon cable - cut it the width of your ribbon cable and long enough to handle.

Insert your ribbon cable into the socket and then insert the clear plastic or extra ribbon cable you cut to size into the socket above the ribbon cable.

This usually will hold the ribbon cable in the socket snuggly with enough pressure not to move and make a good contact for proper operation.
If you want cut and add a small piece of high temperature electrical tape to the socket, insert and cable. I do not recommend scotch tape as it becomes googey at high tempersture.

Reasons why Hard Drives fail.

A hard drive's file system may become corrupted or damaged due to a virus or software malfunction, but this is not a true drive failure because in most cases you can reformat the drive and reinstall the operating system and everything is back to normal. Hard drives fail due to a malfunction in their mechanical or electrical components.

The following picture illustrates the major components inside a hard drive:

The following is a list of the most common mechanical failures that can happen.

1. The spindle motor can malfunction. The spindle motor works much the same way that cd-rom or dvd player spindle motor works and is located in the middle of the hard drive platters. In a hard drives case, it's job is to spin the platters.

2. The read/write heads malfunction or the actuator arm malfunctions and prevents the read/write heads from reading the data stored on the hard discs (the platters). The picture below shows a closer view of the platters, actuator arm, and read/write head.

3. The hard discs themselves can become damaged by rough handling (dropped) or can in some cases become scratched by the read/write heads if they touch the disc.

4. On the back side of the hard drive case you will see where the cable and power supply plugs in and you will also see where the jumpers are. These contain small pins and can easily be bent or broken.

5. Another problem that can occur is the cables and ribbons themselves become loose and do not make a proper connection or the cable themselves can become damaged. The power cable can also become damaged or malfunction.

Hard drives can also fail due to malfunctioning or damaged electronics on their circuit board.

The most common electrical components to malfunction are Transistors, Capacitors, and Resistors. Power surges are the common cause of these small components to fail, so remember to make sure you are using a good surge protector or a UPS system for your entire computer system. A good policy is to always unplug your computer system from outlets when a storm is capable of producing lightening. It is also important to remember that if any of these failures happen, it will be cheaper to replace the drive for a new one. You can return a hard drive to the manufacturer to be fixed if it is still under warranty. Read your documentation and warranty information carefully if you purchase a new hard drive to upgrade/replace your old one.

The following picture is an illustration of where the hard drive is located inside the computer case. In this case, it is a SATA hard drive.

Hello, The problem could be dirt on the surface of the lens, you can clean this by removing the cover of the dvd player . Gently use a dry cotton bud to clean the lens because the lens is fragile. Insert the disc plate into the dvd player and press play, if it does not play try the second method. Ensure the cover of the player is open, connect the power plug to the mains socket and observe the lens if it beam a red light, Also check the ribbon cable use to connect the lens to the printed circuit board, then gently clean the lens with a dry cotton bud , insert the disc plate and press play to see if it play. If it does not play the disc, then this require a change of the lens

A dvd is stuck in my Chrysler town and country multi disk dvd/ cd player. How do I remove it?

Look around the face plate for a very small hole...use a straightened paperclip or equivalent and press in a few inches...its a manuel door release and you should gain access to at least the loading tray.

RIBBON ERRORS

Ribbon error message is displayed when the rotation of the ribbon spindle is not performed or not correctly detected. This can be due to various factors.
- The ribbon roll is not correctly fitted to the spindle.
- The sensors detecting the rotation are out of order or completetly filled with dust or grease.
In this case clean the sensors.
Another reason may be due to Direct thermal printing with a ribbon mounted.

If the disk is not dirty, smudged up or scratched -- it is likely the laser pickup getting weak or the spindle motor not keeping at the right speed. If you have to clean the disc, wipe from the center out with a clean soft cloth.
