I have put heads in alcohol bath for hours. It worked last summer. Now it doesn't. No red or magenta showing up.

I just brought home an IP 1800 printer and I have an exact same problem. Magenta is not printing!

I even tried to replace a brand new color ink cartridge and the problem's still here.

No photo magenta nor photo cyan. Do me a favor, dont respond with fundamental **** like "try a nozzle test." It is apparent that this is a universal problem among i9900 owners and most of us have run the gamut of trying to solve the problem. If you cant offer a kick *** dynamic solution, dont speak.

Soaked the saddle overnight in 50/50 AMMONIA+WATER; gently swished; ran under lukewarm water until CLEAR.

This got all my colors back . . . but RED.

Look, all I want to know is if I need a new printhead.
Because if so, I'm tossing this 2-year old Canon i9900 POS and getting a COLOR LASER.

    Fed Up.

I have 3 Canons i9900 and the clogging of red and photo magenta is common, mainly photomagenta. I take the print head out and place it on a paper towel. I mix a solution of 50/0 distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. I use a syringe and put enough solution around each print head to cover it and let it soak for about 1 hr. I will keep adding solution to keep the head covered. You will notice color leaking out on the paper towel. After an hour I actually push the solution through each head until no color comes out the bottom. I took a piece of tubing and heated it to shrink the end and then cut it off straight. It fits snugly on top of the print head. I then attached it to a syringe and fill the syringe with my solution. Then I push the tubing on top of the head and gently push solution through the head until it comes out clear. I do all the heads. when I am done I use canned air to gently dry everything, especially the contact plate off. when I put the new head in I usually try to put OEM cartridges in the first time, I have been told they flow better. This works for me. It is a pain but I refill my ink and I save $1000's a year in ink.

Try doing calibration or nozzle tests available in maintenance mode.

Hi Mandy
1) confirm there is ink in the magenta cartridge first - by removing it from printer and looking through the ink 'window'.
If you can't see the ink level, it's either empty or very close to it. If so, replace the cartridge.
2) If ink level looks ok, install it back in printer then set out a full page of magenta (or red) background or large graphic and print few pages on high print quality setting until the magenta starts to print. This works better than printhead cleaning/deep cleaning because it wastes less ink.
3) If it still doesn't print red after 2-3 pages, the printhead is blocked. Take it out and rinse under hot water tap. Keep washing it until only clean water is coming out. Shake any water off then DRY the electrical contacts really well. Don't install a wet printhead back in printer - or you may damage it. Run one or two deep cleans and print a nozzle check. With bit of luck all colours will work now...

good luck!

Photos have started to show "banding" stripes

When a couple of deep cleaning cycles don't improve your photos, it's time for a new printhead. Some nozzles may be burned out. The printhead is part #

My canon i9900 prints photos with an over abundance of red

Check your inks and make sure you don't have photo cyan where the cyan should be, and print a nozzle check to see that all colors are printing. Also make sure photo magenta and regular magenta are in the right places.

I have new printhead.

First, go to Canon i9900 Support

If the Support & Service tab is not selected, click on it.

In the search box type reseating printhead and click Search.

One of the results will be "How do I reseat/remove the printhead?"

Click it. A step by step (with animation) will be shown. Just install the new printhead when it calls to reseat the printhead.

Make sure you do the printhead alignment after installing. if you are unsure about how to do this, go back to the support page above and search for align printhead. There will be step by step instructions for this too.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Most of Group 1inks,(except red) won't print

Over on the right is not waste ink pads, waste ink is under the print engine covering the whole bottom of the printer. On the right is the purge assembly and there is ink on the filters on top and on the squeegee that wipes the printhead. You may need a new purge assembly, or just re attach a hose in the purge unit that may have come off. That printer is well worth the repair...

How to replace the printer head yourself for canon i9900

When you open the cover and let the carriage come to the center, you remove all the inks and then lift the lever on the side of the carriage to release the printhead. The top comes toward you first and then you lift out. You remove all the packing from the new printhead and install in the reverse order. Printhead is QY6-0055-000

Canon i9900 isn't printing photo magenta

Use denatured alcohol to soak the print head. Then use suction to draw the alcohol back thru to the foam ports where the ink cartridges rest. Continue until the alcohol runs clear. Then use water and then repeat with alcohol. Allow to dry and re-install in printer. Use new ink cartridges when re-starting printing.

Only half of the 6c nozzle check pattern working

That issue usually indicates a bad printhead. I had to fix a lot of i9900 printers, and after cleaning the printhead there still was no change. Other models do that too when the printhead starts going out. This is an expensive printhead, but easy to replace, as you know. Link below to some options:
