All you have to do is reinstall the printer.. But before that just uninstall the printer completely from the pc.. Then unplug it from all connections.. Then power off the printer for 30 minutes.. It will reset the printer.. Then replug the printer.. and download the latest driver of the printer from the following link..
Yes please visit lexmark.com and goto support section and download the up-to-date software for your make and model and just install it. After that and rebooting your pc you should be fine unless your printer itself has an issue.
Most of the time the "problem communicating with the printer" message pops up on Lexmark X1185 series when the driver gets corrupted. The best fix for this issue would be to uninstall the software first. Try connecting the USB to a different USB port (Please avoid using USB hubs, if any) and then reinstall the software. This should normally fix the printer communication issues!
Check if u have downloaded the correct software from the website...there r tow versions for vista (64bit and 32 bit)...check if ur Vista is 64 or 32 bit and d\w the software.....

Check the USB cable..try different port... Clear all the docs in the printer folder... Remove the power adaptor and replung..restart computer..
When u unplug and replung the usb cable doesn ur computer give a pop up "found New hardware" ?...If it doesnt..then (Check if USB printing support,USB composite device are present in the Device manager...i.e Right click on "my computer" ikon-go to PROPERTIES-Hardware-Device manager-Click the plus sing near and check in the list )
