Hp psc 1210 not working in vista - but diagnostic utility shows all ok - and prints test page

I have a new compaq presario notebook, running Windows Vista Home premium.

I'm trying to install my old (2004) printer to it and it's not working -HP PSC 1210 - seems to install ok - using a driver from Vista, but will not print anything - test page from printer properties page, or just "hi there' from notepad.exe.

However I installed an HP diagnostics utility - it says the printer is working fine - shows a check marks, and prints a test page.

Why does the diagnostic work, but plain printing does not?

I finally got this to work by installing the windows vista update for the printer. Note- the update would only work if the printer (USB) was attached.

Then, just plugging it in and using the windows vista basic driver seems to work.

Here is the full-write up on the HP PSC1210. Read through this thoroughly to ensure that you follow all the steps to make it work in Vista, since there is no Vista native driver.

Hope this helps - remember to rate :)

I don't think my posting was inappropriate. Because of the lack of native Vista support, you must follow HP's specific instructions to ensure that the printer works properly. It obviously is not. Diagnostics can print all day - that is controlled by the onboard EEPROM, and as long as you have ink, diagnostics will print.

I posted the article to show that a) HP requires a very specific configuration to make the printer work in Vista and b) there is no native driver and c) if installed without following these instructions, it might not work like it should ...

....and that's exactly what the user is saying, that the printer is "not working like it should". I don't think it was fair to mark my answer as inappropriate.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I saw the problem ...and as a PC tech, the FIRST thing I would have done to troubleshoot the problem is a) find the driver and b) if no driver, RTFM

Well, I hope I was able to assist you in some way. Thank you for removing the "inappropriate" rating. I'm only here to help, and would not waste your time (or anyone's) if I didn't think I could actually offer something helpful :)

    Good luck, keep printing! :)

Printer says out of paper. paper added still wont print

The solution to this is bizarre but worked for me.
In Vista press the windows key and R button. The Run window opens and in the run window type services.msc and then press Enter.
2. Locate Print spooler from the Services window which opened in the previous step.
3. Right click on it and select Restart.

Your printer will print a self-test page but then should be good to go.

Can't install to Vista HP PSC 1210

Use Paint.
It's not ideal, but I can scan with my HP PSC 1205 running Vista when I use Paint. Just click 'file' then 'from Scanner or Camera'.
Works a treat.

My hp psc 1210 won't work with vista

I had a similar problem! Here is what eventually worked for me, after searching through postings for hours on end...

First, I made sure I had the new driver. Second, (and this might be different for you), my computer recognized my printer, but any time I sent something to print, it never made its way there. The little printer icon at the bottom said 1 document pending, then quickly said 0 documents pending, but nothing ever printed. When I ran HP diagnostics, it said everything was okay with the printer, and even printed a test page! But still nothing from any other program. So, eventually I went to control panel, then printers, then I clicked on the HP printer, then right clicked and went to properties. I changed two things in here, and I'm not sure which one was the solution. First, I changed the security settings (in the security tab) so that every user had access to all options for the printer. Second, on the advanced tab, I selected print directly to printer instead of the spool print documents option. And tada it worked!

May not solve anyone elses problem, but I didn't see this solution in any of the posting sites, so I thought I'd share it. Give it a try!
