Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

I used the self cleaning selection on my Admiral Designer Series gas range. The oven went through the complete cycle of 3 hours. I unlocked the door and was able to open the oven door no problem. Later on I went to use the oven, pushed the bake button and the lock light would flash. I could not get past that to get the oven to come on. I turned off the electricity and then turned it back on and the lock light still blinked.

    Hi Huuum!
I kept the electricity off about 10 minutes. It did not lock up again. But the lock indicator light continued to blink when I tried to turn on the oven. The Model # is DF255677. We bought it new in either 98 or 99.

I appreciate you taking the time to assist me with this problem.

The oven does not work, the indicator light is still flashing. Do you know if there is a reset button somewhere?

    Thanks again for your time,
    Gratefully,
    Friendscreek

Whelp, I held down the clock button, held it until F1 appeared then I pressed cancel and it cleared. Unfortunately the lock indicator is still blinking and will not allow me to turn the oven on. It's late....I'll try turning off the electricity again tomorrow.

Thanks again for everything. I'll let you know if anything happens after I turnoff the electricity.

    Hi Huuum,

Well, Yesterday I turned the electricity to the range off for 20 minutes. No difference. I guess I'll just have to call a repairman. I appreciate you trying to fix it for me. Very kind of you.

Hello Friends Creek.
Welcome to Fixya
You said, you used the self cleaning selection on my Admiral Designer Series gas range. The oven went through the complete cycle of 3 hours. You then unlocked the door and was able to open the oven door no problem. Later on you went to use the oven, pushed the bake button and the lock light would flash. And you could not get past that to get the oven to come on.

You did the right thing to turn off the electricity and then turned it back on.
Did you wait 5 minutes before turning the power back on?Or just flick it off and on?
You said, the lock light still blinked.
But did it lockup again?

Please send me the model and year of your range.
Huuum

You said, you kept the electricity off about 10 minutes.
It did not lock up again.
So, that part is soled? It's unlocked now ?

You said, But the lock indicator light continued to blink when you tried to turn on
    the oven.
Question: Did the oven operate despite the lock indicator light flashing?
If the answer is yes, then the indicator light is giving a false signal and is faulty!

    Let me know the answers!!!!!!!!!

If it works you can use it like that and ignore the flashing light OR get the switch or sensor fixed!

The Model # is DF255677. You bought new in either 1998 or 1999.(ten years)

    ******************************************************************************************
Here is a report that I just read !
Perhaps you will find it interesting!

    Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old range

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
    in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your range,
How much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

    Follow these guidelines:

    When a repair makes sense.

If your range is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
    Note that ranges under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your ranger is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

    When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new range.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive range
    eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of ranges you replace are likely to end up in a landfill.

The only reset that Admiral has is to power off and then later power on, as I advised you earlier.

Try this as if there is and error code!

When there is an error code for this brand range you would "hold down" any button,

except the cancel or the up or down arrows .

If this does not reset or clear errors codes like F-1 or F- anything then the control panel must be changed. The part is $137. and $65.labor at maytag.

BUT, I think this is not the control panel, but the lock switch or sensor!

if the above does not work for you, unfourtunatly will need to call service This is a Maytag range.

I hope it clears for you with thie hold down of the button!

Let me know how it goes!

I wish I could be there to be hands on!

Please remember to leave a rating for me before you leave!

    Thank You Huuum

If you think of any other questions off shoot them at me!

Since this does not reset or clear it,

BUT, I think this is not the control panel, but the lock switch or

    at this point!!

I hope it clears for you with the hold down of the button!

Hey there gcato1, your problem is actually a protective feature designed to prevent you from getting burned. The self cleaning feature runs at extremely hot temps. Until the temperature reaches a safe level, the oven door will remain latched. Be patient and the problem will solve itself.

How to CLEAN a Frigidaire Self-Cleaning Oven
Step 1Use a plastic spoon to scrape away any extra spillovers or burnt-on food from inside the oven. Remove as much of this as you can before running the self-cleaning cycle, because any spillovers left in the oven during the cleaning cycle may cause a lot of smoke.
  • Step 2Wipe off the inside of the oven with a rag dipped in soapy water. Be careful not to get any cleaning supplies on the oven door gasket or to disrupt the position of the gasket at all; having a good seal is critical to the success of the oven's self-cleaning cycle.
  • Step 3Clean any soil away from the oven frame and its door liner with a rag dipped in soapy water. Any soil left on these parts of the oven may become burned on during the self-cleaning cycle.
  • Step 4Pull the broiler pan and grid, any utensils, and any tin foil that may have been left in the oven out of it. They can't withstand the extreme temperatures the self-cleaning oven will reach. It's okay to leave the oven racks in the oven.
  • Step 5Make sure the oven door is completely closed.
  • Step 6Press the "CLEAN" button on the control pad. Use the up and down arrows to select the desired cleaning time; use 2 hours for a lightly soiled oven and 3 or 4 hours for a dirtier oven. The oven will lock itself and begin the cleaning cycle.
  • Step 7Wait for the cycle to end and the oven to cool; it will then unlock itself automatically. Don't try to open the oven door before it has unlocked itself.

Gas range oven door with not open

Your self cleaning cycle is running. When self cleaning is running the door is automatically locked and will not unlock until the self cleaning cycle completes or self cleaning is turned off. You should be able to just turn off the self cleaning cycle and the door will unlock. Do not try to pry open the oven door. You will just damage the door and/or the catch.

Lost Manual and would like instruction on how to set for self clean cycle?

Make sure you have everything out of the oven, including the oven racks.

    1. Press SELF CLEAN.
    2. Press the TEMP/TIME "+" or "-" arrow pads to enter the desired self-clean cycle.
    3. Press START.
The oven door will automatically lock. The DOOR LOCKED and CLEAN indicator lights will be
    displayed.
    4. When the self-clean cycle is complete and the oven cools, the DOOR LOCKED and CLEAN
    indicator lights will turn off.
    5. When the oven is completely cooled, remove ash with a damp cloth.

Recommended times are 2 hours 30 minutes for light soil and 4 hours 30 minutes for heavy soil.

If your oven has a HI and LO self clean time, HI is 4 hours 30 minutes and LO is 3 hours 30 minutes.

It is also recommended that you remove anything plastic from the top of the stove during cleaning.

How do use self clean service?

CAUTION: SHOULD AN OVEN FIRE OCCUR,
CLOSE THE OVEN DOOR AND TURN OFF THE
OVEN. IF THE FIRE CONTINUES, USE A FIRE
EXTINGUISHER. DO NOT PUT WATER OR FLOUR
ON THE FIRE. FLOUR MAY BE EXPLOSIVE.
To set the controls for a self-clean cycle:
For satisfactory results use a 2 hour self-clean cycle for
light soils and a 3 hour cycle for average to heavy
    soils.
    1. Be sure the clock shows the correct time of day.
    2. Press Clean. "— — —" appears in the display.
    3. Press the Up Arrow until "3:00" appears in the
display for a 3 hour cycle, or press the Down Arrow
until "2:00" appears in the display for a 2 hour cycle.
    4. As soon as the Up Arrow or Down Arrow is
released, "CLN" appears in the display.
    5. As soon as the controls are set, the motor driven
lock will begin to close automatically and the "LOCK"
indicator light will flash. DO NOT open the door while
the light is flashing (it takes about 15 seconds for the
    oven door to lock).
    6. The "LOCK" light will glow until the cleaning cycle is
completed or cancelled, and the oven
    temperature has cooled.
When the self-clean cycle is completed:
    1. The time of day or “END” will appear in the display
window and the “Clean” and "LOCK" light will continue
    to glow.
    2. Once the oven has cooled down for about 1 HOUR
and the "LOCK" light has gone out, the oven door can
    be opened.
    3. If “END” is in the display and the “Clean” indicator
remains on, press Clear/Off. The time of day will
    appear in the display.
NOTE: When the oven is cool, wipe away any residue
or powdered ash with a damp cloth or paper towel.
Stopping or interrupting a self-cleaning cycle:
If it becomes necessary to stop or interrupt a selfcleaning
    cycle.
    1. Press Clear/Off.
    2. Once the oven has cooled down for about 1 HOUR
and the "LOCK" light has gone out, the oven door can
    be opened.
    3. Restart the self-clean cycle once all conditions have
    been corrected.
    How the ES 200 operates:
CAUTION: NEVER ATTEMPT TO REMOVE EITHER
THE BAKE OR BROIL ELEMENT WITHOUT DISCONNECTING
    ELECTRICAL POWER FROM THE
    RANGE. ELECTRICAL POWER IS CONNECTED
    TO THE ELEMENTS WHENEVER ELECTRICAL
POWER IS CONNECTED TO THE RANGE.
The ES 200 electronic oven control system is made up
of three parts that control the bake and broil elements,
and the locking of the door in the self-clean cycle.
    1. Electronic oven control.
    2. Oven temperature sensor.
    3. Oven door lock mechanism.

    How does self clean work

MOST SELF-CLEAN OVENS RAISE THE TEMPERATURE IN THE OVEN TO ABOUT 850 DEGREES AND BURN EVERYTHING TO A POWDER. THAT IS WHY THERE IS A SPECIAL DOOR GASKET AND IMPROVED INSULATION AROUND THE OVEN LINER. THE AVERAGE CLEAN CYCLE
TAKES 3 HOURS TO COMPLETE. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
LOCK THE OVEN DOOR (SOME MODELS LOCK THE DOOR
    AUTOMATICALLY) SELECT SELF-CLEAN, AND START.
OLDER MODELS WITH A MECHANICAL TIMER AND CLOCK REQUIRE SETTING THE START AND STOP TIME.
