Hello peter639,
Since you failed to include brand and/or model number.. I suggest you simply add -on another cord to your existing flex hose. If your existing hose has molded connectors on them that you cannot easily find to match, then you may be better off just buying another hose from the manufacturer.. Your call..

The hose is sucking up but the base plate doesnt?


If you have taken the bottom end of the machine apart, you might not have reassembled it correctly so that the path to the floor (base) plate is obstructed when the vacuum cleaner body is laid back, otherwise:

You have either a blockage in the section of the cleaner in the vicinity of the short flexible hose and the floor (base) plate or the the short flexible hose has become detached at one or both ends.

1. Stand the machine upright with the beater bar in the "off " position. Machine switched off but plugged into the mains outlet.
2. Lay machine on its left hand side. You will see the short flexible hose uppermost. Check that it is attached at both tends and has not split or cracked. Check for obvious visible obstruction inside.
3. Remove the floor (base) plate by releasing the three plastic clips with a quarter turn anti-clockwise. Lift floor plate forwards and check no obstruction. Replace floor plate. Stand machine upright on floor.
4. Press two plastic clips to release the inspection cover, on bottom right hand side of machine (when standing behind it). Look into the hole: you will now be looking down into the U-bend that leads to the hose. Switch on the machine: full suction should be at the hole on the side of the machine (otherwise the hose would not have worked). Switch off.
5. Lean the handle and machine body backwards, as though you were going to use the machine on the floor. The hole to the hose now becomes covered and you will be able to see into the short flexible hose that leads to the floor plate. Check for obstruction. Replace inspection cover.

If there's no obstruction and the flexible hose is sound and attached securely then the machine will work - there's nothing else to check.

Extend a Vacuum's Hose "Lifespan"


There are several things that can lead to a fairly short "life span" on a vacuum hose. Hoses need to be replaced periodically anyway, but getting the maximum use means reduced cost for your investment. Common problems are: worn out hose, leaky hose, broken wire, loose connections, and of course, clogs.
Normal wear and tear may seem to be a problem that there's no help for, however anyone can reduce this on their vacuum hose. Some examples include:

Hang hose properly. Improper storage may promote wear on the hose and stress on the wiring. I recommend detaching from vacuum and wands, and hanging across two large hooks or hangars. This places weight upon two areas of hose, instead of just one.

Placing a hose sock on the hose will help reduce wear and tear caused by dragging back and forth on the floor, corners, and other surfaces. The heavier the fabric, the better protection.

Pulling the vacuum behind you while cleaning creates high stress on both the hose material and internal wiring. Indications of problems are loss of airflow/suction at end of hose for the first, and power nozzle not operating or intermittently operating. Avoid pulling vacuum behind you; move vacuum closer to the cleaning area to clean.

Loose connections are pretty much inevitable over time. The connections from hose to wand, wand to wand, and wand to power nozzle all are susceptible to wear and breakage. Replace hose and wand connections that are broken, loose, and/or blackened. Those things can cause bad electrical shock.

Clogs are often caused by a large item being vacuumed, but more often are due to a long, thin object being sucked up, sticking in the hose, and other stuff backing up against it. This will eventually cut off air flow and result in a burned out motor if not remedied.

Maximize your vacuum hose’s use by following the above suggestions.

The power head requires 120 Volts. Some hoses have a receptacle in the handle for the power head plug, and the hose has a cord at the wall inlet end that plugs into a receptacle. Some hoses have a plug at the wall inlet end that plugs into a 120Volt receptacle built into the inlet. The hose plugs into this receptacle when you push the hose into the inlet. The power for this built-in receptacle is wired with line voltage when the system is installed.

This is a pretty common problem on the Guardian, and it's usually caused by 1 of two things. Both are pretty simple fixes. The first thing you should try is simply eliminating the wand assemblies from the vacuum cleaner. So remove the hose from the upper wand, and disconnect the lower wand from the power nozzle. Now try connecting the hose directly into the power nozzle and turn on the vacuum cleaner, and power nozzle. Does it work? If yes, then one of your wands has gone bad, and you'll need to replace it. If the power nozzle still won't come on, then you may have a much simplier problem. This is either a terrible design by Aerus, or they knew this was going to happen, and made it this way so you'd have to take your machine into to have them service it. It's a very simple problem usually.

Look on the neck of the power nozzle. You will see a small circle indent on the front part of the neck located underneath of where the wand connects into the neck. This is actually a cover that hides a screw below. Simply use a small flat head screw driver, and pop off the small circular cap that hides the screw. There is a Star bit screw underneath. I believe it's a T15, but it may be a T10 sized screw. Use I believe a T15 Torx screw driver and remove the screw from the neck.

Once the screw has been removed, Use a flathead screw driver, and pry the front cover of the neck off. It shouldn't take a lot of force, and should come off pretty easily. Once this has been removed, you should see to metal pins, and two lead wires. What happens is the lead wire becomes disconnected from the metal pin, which then prevents the power nozzle from turning on. Simply reattach the lead wire into the metal pin, and snap the front cover of the neck back on. Put your screw back in, and your screw cover (or you can just leave this part off, you'll probably be having to remove it frequently to reinstall the lead wire, lol).

If neither of these two problems fixed your machine, then it sounds like you may have a bad hose assembly. Hopefully this isn't the case, and it's usually not. 9 times out of 10, it's just the lead wire that's come loose. It doesn' come on when hose is plugged in. I checked that the unit was plugged in and the socket works.


It could be one of several problems.
1. Ensure the filter is clean. It should be rinsed and dried thoroughly about every six months. Allowing it to go longer results in dirty filter, which results in excessive stain on the motor, which will eventually cause the motor to burn out. I highly recommend keeping an extra filter on hand to use while the other is drying.
2. Ensure filter is in the vacuum and properly seated. There's a cut-off switch above the filter that prevents the vacuum from working if there is no filter. This is to prevent dirt and debris from being soaked into the motor compartment and thus into the motor.
3. Detach the low voltage wiring from side of unit. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to short across the terminals of the vacuum. If the motor and CVA board are good the vacuum should run. If it doesn't, the problem is with the motor or CVA. Further trouble-shooting to determine the problem should be done at an authorized Aerus Electrolux store by a trained technician.
4. Any broken or worn out switches, wiring, and/or terminals in vacuum unit or hose/attachments could also result in the machine not working. This is assuming you have the deluxe set of attachments with the electric hose and power nozzle.
Testing hose: Detach hose from wall and wand. Turn switch full on. Using a continuity tester or multimeter, place one lead in a terminal on the hose, and the other lead to each lead on the other end of the hose. One lead should read zero, the other infinity. Repeat with the other terminal. The readings on the other end of the hose should be opposite of the first lead. If any of the reading are other than this, the hose needs to be repaired or replaced.
Any problem can be easily diagnosed at an authorized Aerus Electrolux store. You'll need to take the unit, hose, wands, and power nozzle to the shop for accurate diagnosis.

When I insert the hose into an vacumn outlet nothing happens. I tried pressing the reset button but still nothing.


First, make sure the unit is still plugged in.
2. Ensure the circuit breaker has not blown. This is easily checked by simply plugging another item into the outlet. If it has blown, flip it back on. If it continues to blow, there's a short in the cord or wiring of the vacuum.
3. Is it just one outlet, or all of them. If it's just one, it needs replaced.
4. Check the prongs on the hose, wands, and power nozzle to ensure they haven't shorted out.
5. Use a multimeter or continuity tester to check wires in the hose. Touch lead of the mm or ct to a prong on the hose, the other lead to the connector on the other end of the hose. Check both connectors. One should show continuity, the other will not. Repeat for other prong. If either prong shows zero, hose needs replaced.
6. Motor is burned out and needs replaced.
There are other problems that could cause this, so I recommend taking it to the Broan-NuTone dealer you got it from for them to check the vacuum for problems.

I have a built in vacuum with a Hayden Deluxe Superpack carpet nozzle. The vacuum works but the Superpack power nozzle does not turn on. Reset does not work. Are there steps for troubleshooting, or...


Find a local vacuum repair center. Could be a short in the hose. The PN could need a new motor or circuit breaker. It will be cheaper to repair than replace, but check the hose for current at the handle end.

If there is a switch on your hose, it may be broken.
Your system powers on from the inlets via two low voltage wires that run from the inlets to the switch/relay at the power unit. Each inlet has 2 spring loaded pins attached to the low voltage wires. In the photo below you should see these pins at the bottom of the opening, just above the door hinge. The receptacle at the top of the inlet in this photo supplies 110 volts to power your power nozzle. Not all inlets have this option, but if yours does, exercise extreme caution. Your hose must have a completely metal end or if it is a plastic end, it must have a metal band in order to short the 2 low voltage wires together to trigger the switch.
You can manually short the two low voltage pins together by using a metal pipe or needle nose pliers, just touch both pins at the same time. CAUTION: stay away from the 110 volt receptacle if present.
If your system powers on with this manual method then it would seem that the problem is in your hose.
If your system does not power on; your low voltage wires may be disconnected from the power unit or disconnected somewhere else . It's also possible that you have a bad circuit/controller board in the power unit.

The power head has developed an intermittent, but frequent, electrical short. Is there an easy way to assess where? Or is this a matter for a repair shop.

A majority of the time when this happens, it's caused by the hose having a short in it. You'll need to first identify what the source of the short it. To do this, turn the power brush on, and then swivel the hose on both the end before the handle, as well as the end that plugs into the vacuum, can you get the power brush to cut on/off for you from here? If yes, then you'll need to purchase a new hose. You may purchase this hose directly from Sears, however when you buy the hoses through Sears you have to assemble the hose yourself, which is very challenging. An easier way for you to replace the hose, is to purchase a Panasonic canister hose. There are two types of hoses, a 2 wire hose, and a 3 wire hose that fit most Kenmores. When you take the hose out of the canister, look on the part that plugs into the canister, how many prongs do you see here? If 2 then you'll need a 2 wire hose, if 3 then a 3 wire hose.

If you are not able to locate the short in the hose, then you may have a short either in the wand, or the power nozzle neck wire. For the wand, put one foot on your power nozzle while it's running, then pull up and down on the end of the wand that plugs into the canister, as well as the end that the hose plugs into. If you can get the vacuum power brush to cut on / off when you're doing this, this indicates your wand is bad and needs to be replaced. If it doesn't cut on / off, remove the wand and hose from the vacuum completely. Now look where the wand connects into the power nozzle. You should see two electrical prongs on the neck of the power nozzle. Do you see any burns, or black marks on the prong, or the plastic part that it comes out of? You can also test this part by turning the vacuum's neck to the left and to the right as if you were turning the vacuum.
