Question about Yamaha HTR-5440 Receiver

1 Answer

Audio won't play on DVD - but it will play for CDs

We have the Yamaha HTR-5440 attached to a 6 disc Sony CD/DVD player (DVP-NC600). All of a sudden, the audio stopped playing on DVDs - but CDs still work (so we assume it's not the CD/DVD player).

We're assuming the settings for the receiver somehow got changed - but we don't know how to fix it.

Please help!! Thanks!

We ended up taking the DVD/CD player and the receiver back to Best Buy, where we bought them. The tech in Home Theater duplicated the problem, but couldn't figure it out. He went to get a Geek Squad member. As soon as the Home Theater tech tried it again in the Geek Squad member's presence, everything worked! The geeks shall inherit the earth, I guess!

We took eveything home and hooked it up. We watched the first DVD in weeks - 'Cloverfield,' very entertaining, by the way - and everything worked like brand-new!

Electronics surely can be weird sometimes!

    Thanks for your help, barneyluc!

Hello, you can verify that your receiver is working or not. When you are playing a dvd unplug the audio RCA plugs (red and white) from the back of the Sony dvd player. Touch the tips of each of the RCA plugs with your fingertip. You will hear a buzz sound coming from the speaker associated with the plug if the receiver is working\ i.e. touch the red RCA plug tip and the right speaker will hum...touch the white tip and the left speaker will hum or buzz. This will not hurt your system or speaker. If you do not hear the hum turn the volume to 3 or so and wet your fingertip and tap the tip of the RCA connectors. You will hear "pops" coming from the respected channel. I believe your cd\dvd is at fault. Good Luck!

Sony 5 changer dvd player won't work. displayed code 31

Hi:
This may be caused by one or two causes. The laser pickup assembly is bad or the most common failure for DVD and CD players is the spindle motor. This motors bushings fails over time and does not spin the disc at the right speed so the unit times out. You can repair the by purchasing what sony calles the Mech Assembly it comes with new laser and stepper motor as well as the Spindle motor.

Sony DVP-NC600 Multi-disc DVD Player No Disc Error

The only other thing I can suggest, having repaired many Sony CD/DVD players, is to get a can of compressed air and try to blow any dust out from the laser assembly. Since you've already cleaned the lens (the most common problem), you also might have dust down inside the assembly. Try blowing with the air nozzle down inside, around the gap between the lens and the cover surrounding it. Do it from at least a couple of inches away, if the air is too powerful you can damage the wiring inside the assembly.

If this fails to correct the problem, your laser output may have diminished over time and the only repair is to install a new laser assembly. The cost of this part will most likely not be worth it to you since the unit is quite old now.

Dvd player frequently pauses or freezes while trying to play audio cd's

You tried cleaning the lens right?  That's the first thing I would do. You may have to actually open up the unit and use some windex on a cotton swap to clean the lens. Be very careful not to overwet the cotton swab. Use the other end of the swab to dry the lens.

The red wavelength of light from the laser might not be getting through the lens properly, which is used for the Audio CDs, where the higher frequency laser is used for the DVD material.

Check your cables between your DVD player and the TV, this play has component video outputs that could possibly cause this issue.
