Ah , I have been down this road myself :-) ...... I can give you a few words of advice......

  • As far as the server itsef , it really doesn't need anything spectaculer in regards to hardware & specs.....a box running XP with 512mb of RAM would suffice...so your server should be fine
  • Bandwith - you are going to need ALOT of it if you are streaming more then 64kb's....typically if you are playing any sort of music you stream at 128kb....so make sure you have a hefty data plan!
  • For the server itself , use the "Shoutcast" software for hosting the station....it is easy to use , has plenty of support and documentation....you can literally have a station up in 5 mins!
  • For broadcasting you can use the Winamp program with the "Shoutcast DSP" plugin...but if you are playing alot of music , want advertisments and like to DJ I would recommend something like "SAM 4"
Just a quick overview to get you started , all you really have to do is download the shoutcast server software , edit the config file - which includes the admin password , the port to broadcast on , the max number of listners you want etc..........

You then need to do some port forwarding, opening up the port on your router and sending the connections to your server....actually doing it is easy, but it varies by router model, you can use this site for a step by step, just select your router , and then select "Shoutcast" http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

From there you launch the server program , and connect to the server with Winamp or SAM....and now your on the air!

SHoutcast documentation to setup DJ and server:
http://shoutcast.com/download

I have alot of exp. with this , you didnt really specify a specfic problem or question , so if you need anything else be sure to leave a comment here and I can help you even more!

No your server really doesn't need anything but a connection to the internet.....the bandwidth is basically the data that you are uploading/downloading......most ISP's have a cap on your bandwidth , once you go over they shut you down.

Here is a calculator to show you what I mean:

24 kbps with 1 listeners for 1 Hour (3600 seconds).

    0.01 GB
    10.55 MB
    10800 Bytes

That is how much bandwidth would be taken by one listener for an hour at a 24kbps stream

To do your own calculations you can go here:http://servers.internet-radio.org.uk/too...

If you pay for a hosted server from a hosting company , then yes can be unlimited bandwith and you should not have a problem. I was just going by the fact that you were using your own server , if that was the case you would be using your own bandwidth which was what I was warning you about.

Its expensive to get unlimited bandwidth , but you need to call your internet provider for the details....if you need any help setting up feel free to ask!

I can't get my LAN settings to automatically detect settings, box will not check.

Reset your proxy settings
Proxy servers, or proxies, act as intermediary servers between a Web browser and the Internet. According to Microsoft's website, proxies are mainly used by networks in companies to enhance the security and speed of their network connection.
Proxy servers can also be used to log Internet usage, mask the network address of a server or to apply global restrictions to a network.
Internet Explorer is set to automatically detect proxy servers by default.
You can reset the Internet Explorer proxy settings to their default settings from the "Internet Options" configuration.

I have found the easiest way to do this is to add the menu to the top of a webpage.
Create the menu tab on your homepage right click in the top toolbar you should see a number of toolbar options select the menu tab which will add File Edit View Favorites Tools and Help
Click on tools option then from the drop down list Internet Options
Select the "Connections" tab, and click the "LAN Settings" button.
Delete the proxy server address and port from the "Proxy Server" settings and clear the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" check box.

Clear the check box beside the "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script" options in the "Automatic Configuration" section of the "LAN Settings" dialog window. Click "OK."
Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save these changes and close the "Internet Options" dialog window.
Close all Internet Explorer browser windows for these changes to take effect.

I have an older HP Pavilion desktop and everything was fine until I booted up last evening. The problem is I can't connect to the internet.

It sounds like your DNS records are jacked up, there are multiple things that could be causing this.1. click start, then click run in the box type cmd and press enter. You'll get an ms-dos box type in "ipconfig /flushdns" no quotes. close the box and try again. 2. right click your internet connection in the taskbar and click properties. click details and then click tcp/ip v4 and click properties. make sure your computer is set to automatically recieve IP address and DNS settings. then you can try and click "use the following dns server settings, use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for the servers (these are google's dns servers)
if none of that works download and run this: http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4372&file=15&evp=4578a0d2691013178f302c260093894b
it's an automatic winsock fix

SMTP Server
In the fight against unsolicited commercial email (spam), some Internet service providers require their subscribers to send mail through the ISP's own SMTP servers. If you experience problems sending email, please contact your ISP to determine if it requires different SMTP server settings. You will need to use the ISP's SMTP server in place of Yahoo!'s SMTP server when configuring your POP mail client.
The following is a partial list of ISPs that require you to use their SMTP servers. If your ISP is among them, try replacing the Yahoo! SMTP server with the ISP server in your POP mail client settings, or consult the ISP's help files. If your ISP does not appear in the list below, please contact your ISP directly for more information.

My son is a soldier stationed on a base in Iraq. He has a Ts2 satellite network. He is having problems getting there routers to connect to the primary switches. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

make sure the routers are set to router operating mode and not gateway (in advanced routing settings if linksys brand) and they are set as uplinks to each other and not in the WAN port. Make sure all the DHCP servers are set to OFF and just have the one hosting the internet enabled. This way anyone who connects to any router will be pointed to the correct DHCP server (the one hosting your internet connection)

...being in military i would assume they have unix based routers or at least standard routers with flashed unix firmware ...im using DD-WRT flashed linksys WRT54G routers and boost the transmit power to 210mW. Plus being military they should really have a yagi based antenna with at least 24DBi.
..any more questions email jon@thamind.net

HP compaq d530c timer running fast

you may check and see if it's set to the "internet time" -> "automatically syncronize with an internet time server", if there you have a wrong server, then it'll reset your time wrong, or if you have another timezone set in windows, than it'll update to that timezone.

secondly, if it's a hardware related issue, than it can be the battery
