Strange...

Try unplugging the machine for 10 seconds, normally HP's will tell you if the have a bad modem ("checking phone line").

Plug a regular phone into the wall jack and listen for a dial tone also make sure the phone cord is plugged into the LINE port of the fax not the phone icon port.

ECM error message

Noise in the phone line, or low signal strength during fax transmission can result in fax failures. Noise or poor signal strength can cause a partial or complete loss of fax information during transmission. When Error Correction Mode (ECM) is on, the receiving fax machine checks the fax information for errors during reception. If the receiving fax machine detects an error, the receiving fax requests that the sending fax resend the information. Resending all or part of the information can make transmission times longer, but helps improve the quality of the received fax.
If the phone line quality or signal strength is extremely poor, sending a fax can fail. Turning off ECM can improve the ability of the product to send a fax successfully when the phone line quality is poor. However, the image quality of the received fax might be poor.
If ECM must be off to send faxes successfully, have the telephone service provider check the phone line quality. For an HP Fax, turning off ECM from the control panel does not necessarily mean that fax transmission will not use ECM. Fax products use ECM as follows.
  • All faxes sent in color use ECM.
  • All faxes sent at the highest transmission speed use ECM.
  • The ECM setting affects only sent faxes, not received faxes.
Enabling or disabling Error correction mode (ECM)
  1. On the product control panel, press the Menu button (c01743394.gif ).
  2. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select Basic Fax , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ).
  3. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select ECM Mode , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ).
  4. Use the arrow buttons (c01073166.jpg ) to select On or Off , and then press the OK button (c01335940.jpg ) to confirm the setting.
  5. Press the Back button (c01496476.gif ) twice to return to the main screen.

Hi my hp 640 will not answer a fax call, but will answer only if we pick up the hand set.

Issue When the all-in-one product is sharing a phone line with voice calls, some calls are interrupted by fax tones. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.Step one: Check the Rings to Answer setting If Auto Answer is enabled, the HP fax product will answer the phone line when the number of rings reaches the number of rings specified in the Rings-to-Answer setting. When voice calls will be received on the same phone line as faxes, set to rings-to-answer to 6. If you do not want the fax to answer automatically, either turn off Auto Answer from the front panel and receive faxes manually (this may result in lost faxes) or subscribe to a distinctive ring service from the phone company (if available). Refer to the Answering faxes manually section below to learn how to answer faxes manually or refer to the Using distinctive ringing section below for more information about using distinctive ringing. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. 4. The number of rings before the HP fax product answers will be displayed.
    • The setting is correct if it is 6. Press Cancel or Stop (Stop Fax) to exit the menu.
    • If the number is not 6, press the right arrow button until 6 appears in the display and then press Enter (or Start or OK ).

most likely the fax is incorrectly set up as an extension in a multi-line system rather than a single "telephone". probably the fax injects digits such as a leading zero. the setup needs to be corrected.

HP 640 fax won't send fax but phone works

Unfortunately wer purchased two new hp office jet 7610 which do not come with cabling and we could not get the fax to work. I spent 3 days on the telephone with hp and British Telecom each of which blamed it on each other. After doing some research on the internet I discovered that hp require a strange cable formant which is called a 'cross-over cable' is required. I bought them from cabling4less.co.uk and the product code is BT-203X. They can be found on their web site www.cabling4less.co.uk The link is: http://www.cabling4less.co.uk/category.php?cat_id=237 This should resolve this frustrating problem.

Verify that the sender has the correct fax number.

Call your fax machine from a regular phone and listen for fax tones.

Fax machines are ANALOG devices. Make sure your fax machine is not connected to DSL or any other digital phone line.

1)Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the HP Fax machine.
2)Verify that the phone cable is fully inserted into the fax machine. If your model has a removable Line Interface Unit (LIU) where the phone line plugs into, verify that it is securely snapped in place.
3)If the HP Fax model belongs to the HP Officejet R80 Series , verify that the cable which goes from the Automatic Document Feeder assembly to the rear of the HP All-in-One base is connected.
4)Reconnect the power cord. After the fax reinitializes and it is ready, try to send and receive faxes again.

You can not send or receive faxes with any consistency on Broadband lines. You need an analog telephone line for these to work. Fax machines work on analog technology.
