Question about Sharp AL 1631 Copier

1 Answer

Won't copy anything now.

Our Sharp AL 1631 was showing low on toner, so I put a new OEM cartridge in it. It copied one page fine, but there was a 1/4" black stripe down one edge of the copy. (It was doing that with the old toner cartridge also.) I pulled the cartridge back out, and also the drum unit. I found a 1/2" wide metal strip that looks like a screen, about 10" long laying loose in the bottom where the drum and toner go. I can not see where it goes. I put the drum and toner back in and now it won't copy anything. Sheets come out blank. Any help with this?

OK, so this grid is actually part of the drum unit? If I can't find where it goes, then replacing the drum unit should cure it??

What about the black edge on all my copies? Any help with that??

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tocapet Oct 03, 2008

Misunderstanding here: It was not the drum unit I replaced. It was the toner cartridge. I only have the one drum unit. Today I'm going to try to figure out where the grid goes in the drum unit and see if I can get it back in.

So, basically, I'm still dead in the water here, with a BUNCH of people mad at me.

  • Tocapet Oct 03, 2008

Yes, the grid is a silver flat strip 10" long and 1/2" wide. Here's a pic

I'm going to try to find out how to get it back in!

  • Tocapet Oct 03, 2008

    HEY, it WORKED

The problem was a little ***** peice of plastic that holds one end of that grid was broken off. I got it jimmied back on and it works. At least for now, til the operating committee decides what to do.

Which copier do you guys recommend if we decide to get a new one? Ricoh? Sharp? HP?

    This is a desktop copier.

Don't know why the server did the ****** on my last post. That was not a bad word. Unless you consider "b-i-t-t-y" obscene. As in "littlebitty"

Well, in that case I will be back with you guys

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The "screen" is actually called a grid, it is supposed to be on a unnit called the "primary" which sits on top of the drum (long silver unit) it may have a screw holding it. It must have been serviced or someone touched it, does not come off by-itself, anyway, it distributes the charge of the primary to the drum.
So look for a unit that sits directly on top of the drum unit and is the same lenght as the drum

Hope this helps (please rate. TNX)

1st do this simple test and see if I'm right. put the old drum back in (if you still have it) and make a copy, it should print again, if not then let me know.

2nd you said it copied the print ok for the first copy then went blank !! so the problem was in the old drum unit; there is a black ring around the drum causing the blk line. by replacing it you removed the problem.

If the old one works return the new one as defective.

Well that's unfortunate, it just happened while you did something.

About the grid is it a silver flat strip? I can't get a good picture on the web of the drum, to see if it actually has a grid.

Tnx for the pix, YES it belongs on the drum, not sure how it came off but, look carefully at the drum you will see a thin wire on top of the drum it needs to go "between " the drumand the thin wire.

That unit w/the wire is the primary and it should be able to come off, unfortunately you need to figure out how.

2 ways itis attached, 1 by a screw or 2 snap on

when you take it off it goes ON the primary unit, one end hooks on while the other (in the picture it will be the one on the Left) you will need to push the end of the primary unit (should be spring loaded) put on and let go, should be taught

Put unit back on drum and that's it, should work.

My advive is to get a large sheet of plastic and work on a table (hope you don't have a white shirt on)

    it does contain some toner.

good luck, let me know what happens.

Oh by the way look at the drum and see if there is a black ring or scratch on it, that may be your black line,

To tell you the truth most are made from the same manufactures !!!!!!?????? (Not all, most)

A xerox model 123 is the equivalent of a canon xyz !!!!!! they just put their name on it and they each have their own codes for errors. So service and parts availability is the most important thing.

On the desktop models I would probably go with : Xerox, Sharp, Canon

Was the copier working fine before you changed the cartridge? If so I think your cartridge is the problem. If it started making blank copies right after you changed it. If this is not the case the first thing I would say is it is not the drum. Try opening and closing the right side door. There are contacts in the door that will cause blank copies. I have had several customers do this and it fixed the problem. You can also try pulling out the toner and then pull the drum unit partially out and re-seat it. Then re-install the toner.
Good Luck

Gray lines on the copies

If the toner is low that would cause a problem. If the drum is damaged that would cause a problem too. If you have recently (past month) printed successfully than you might have issues with copy surface. Does the line come when using the auto feeder? Replace/ remove/reinstall the toner cartridge and clean the copy surface. Repost if this does not solve problem.

Several things can cause this problem; The drum cartridge is not being cleaned properly or there is a problem with the toner cartridge . Take out the drum cartridge and inspect it for any signs of the defective image. If that doesnot solve the problem, then Call a tech.
