It all depends on what is generating that smoke..Where there is smoke. there is cost associated with it.. By virtue of diagnostic time or component replacement or both..If your micro is a potential fire hazard then don't compromise your safety. If your warranty JUST expired, you might be able to convince the service people at the place you bought it that it is defective.. and they just MIGHT surprise you by replacing it free. Why not take a shot at it? In fact, if they try to adhere to the letter of the date. then get LOUDER and LOUDER in front oif as many customers that you can.. In some cases, you might be better off talking directly with the dept manager insead of the normal service reps.. Good Luck.. Be Safe...

I have a GE microwave model JVM1851SH06 that is completly dead. I replaced the Fuse and power came back, but 30 sec in it was dead again. What should do next.

You need to first verify that your outlet is correct at 105 to 125 volts AC.

If so, then you may have a failing high voltage transformer (rare) or possibly a failing magnetron, etc.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

Intermittant loud "pop" when starting my microwave

Clean well the inside of the oven, if you keep having the problem and the inside is clean, then the magnetron is starting to go.

How to replace a magnetron?

Sort of rare these go unless it started to arc and smoke!! Most probable failures are high voltage diodes, control electronics.
If you are sure that is your problem then
Remove outer panel and short high voltage capacitor with a jumper wire, then disconnect all wires to magnetron and unscrew the nuts from it and pull out. Check the condition of the rf seal at base of magnetron and inspect waveguide to verify no burn marks.
Also sometimes a mica diffuser will smoke and burn right at the waveguide entrance to the oven cavity. Make sure to note where wires go where. If you put the wires in the wrong places you will get a blown fuze or a nice light show

I would like to know how to clean the inside of my microwave, the wrong cup was put in,and it caught on fire ,and I can't get smoke stain out. Thank you,Molly Dickerson

The smoke stain is almost impossible to remove as smoke tends to get in the pigment of the paint.

If there's a burn smell, you can try simmering a lemon juice and water mixture for several minutes in the microwave. You can also set a plate of charcoal briquettes inside and leave the door closed overnight (DON'T turn the microwave on - just let it sit). Keep the charcoal inside when not using the microwave and it will absorb a lot of the odor.

GE JVM1440 over the counter microwave

If the internal cooling fan is not working (I don't mean the hood / vent / exhaust fan) then you should not use the microwave until it is fixed.

The cooling fan is essential to prevent the magnetron from overheating and being damaged.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.
