Question about D-Link DGL-4100 Router (DGL4100)

Dual Router Configuration

Two D-Link routers in the following configuration:

DGL-4300 WAN connected to ISP:
WAN
Address: by DHCP
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: by DHCP
LAN
Address: 192.168.151.100
Mask: 255.255.255.0

DGL-4100 WAN connected to DGL-4300 LAN:
WAN
Address: 192.168.151.101
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.151.100
LAN
Address: 192.168.251.100
Mask: 255.255.255.0

I can file and print share (up) from the 4100 to the 4300, but not the other way... is there any setting(s) other than setting both routers to the same subnet that will allow me to file and print share from computers on the 4300 down through to computers on the 4100?

    That puts both routers in the same subnet... which I already stated is not desired.

    It is difficult to read the numbers in the screen capture you supplied... I presume the following setting for the 4300:

    Destination IP = LAN IP address of the 4100 (Mine is 192.168.151.101)
    Netmask = 255.255.255.0
    Gateway = LAN IP address of the 4300 (Mine is 192.168.151.100)
    Interface = LAN
    Metric = 1 (but I tried 16 also)

    If I got this correct I set it as suggested and I am unable to ping 192.168.151.101 (the 4100 router) from a PC connected to the 4300.

    I made a Visio of my network which I will go back to the original message and attach. If you can open Visio drawings it may help.

Plug the second router into the lan not the wan and it will act as a switch instead of a router

Ok so you have your first router connected by the isp to the wan port on the 4300.

next use port 1 on the 4300 and connect it to the 4100's wan port.

your config for both routers should look like this.


DGL-4300
WAN IP is from ISP

LAN IS
DHCP turned on
Mask 255.255.255.0
Subnet is 192.168.151.0
Router being 192.168.151.1
DHCP lease leave to 192.168.151.100 and up

DGL-4100
WAN port configured to Static not DHCP and give it an ip out of the dhcp range of the other subnet
so something like 192.168.151.2
Mask is 255.255.255.0
DNS <---important this should be set to the same ip and the first router. so 192.168.151.1

LAN
Set the subnet to 192.168.251.0
mask 255.255.255.0
leave the DHCP for the lan on and set to 192.168.251.100 and up

You also may have to on the 4300 go into the advanced tab ---> on the right select routing

And add the routes from the 4300 to the the 4100 see the image below.
RIP routing should update the dns for both routers but they might not be. It seems to me it a DNS/routing issue. Let me know if this helps and if not we can try some other things. Don't vote till I FIXYA! :D

Converting A Router To A Switch The five steps are:
  1. [Optional] Put a piece of electric tape over the WAN port so it doesn't get used.
  2. Disable the DHCP server.
  3. Change the downstream router's LAN IP.
  4. [Optional] Turn off the wireless radio on the downstream router.
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the upstream router to a LAN port on the downstream router.
Step 1: Putting a piece of electric tape over the WAN port isn't necessary. But it is a good way to prevent future problems caused by someone plugging a device into that port.
Step 2: Log into the downstream router, look for the DHCP configuration section, and disable the DHCP server. For example, on a Dlink DI-614+, DHCP server configuration is a menu in the Home configuration section.

Step 3: Change the downstream router's LAN IP to an unused IP in the same subnet as the upstream router. Log into the upstream router and find the DHCP server controls. Figure 3 shows a typical set of DHCP server controls. You can see that 192.168.3.200 - 250 is the range of addresses that will be issued by this router's DHCP server.
You can use any IP address outside (above or below) this range, except for 0 and 255, which are reserved. You also can't use the IP address used by the upstream router. This is usually 1, which in this case is 192.168.3.1. But if you log into your upstream router's admin screens using an IP address with anything other than 1 as the last octet, i.e. XXX.XXX.XXX.1, then just don't use that address.
Thus, a safe LAN IP address for the downstream router that isn't used by the upstream router is an address from 192.168.3.2 to 192.168.3.199. So I assigned my downstream router a LAN IP of 192.168.3.3 (Figure 4).
Step 4: [Wireless routers only] Disable the downstream router's wireless function. It doesn't hurt to unscrew the antennas from the downstream router as well if they are detachable. This gets them out of the way since you aren't using them anymore. Figure 5 shows the wireless disabled for a D-Link DGL-4300.
Step 5: Connect the downstream router. Run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the upstream router to a LAN port on the downstream router. The LAN ports are the ports that often grouped together and not labeled as WAN or Internet.

How to determine the WAN configuration or Interntet configuration of a SOHO Router?
1. Connect the computer to the Modem via Ethernet cable. Make sure you are able to going online 2. After confirming you are online. Go to Start->Run. Type "cmd" on the Run window. 3. Type "ipconfig" on the command prompt or Black window or DOS window 4. You will be getting IP address,Subnet Mask and Default Gateway
There are 4 possibilities of IP address you can get
i)Public IP address under PPP adapter. -Router has to be configured in PPPoE mode to get a WAN IP. This will require a Username and Password from ISP ii) Public IP address under PPP adapter and Private IP address under Ethernet adapter -Router has to be configured in PPPoE mode to get a WAN IP. This will require a Username and Password from ISP iii)Public IP address under Ethernet adapter -Router has to be configured in Dynamic IP or DHCP mode to get a WAN IP -If it is still not getting a WAN IP address. * Click Mac clone on the router's WAN configuration * Power-cycle modem and Router. iv)Just a Private IP address under Ethernet adapter -Router has to be configured in Dynamic IP or DHCP mode to get a WAN IP -If it is still not getting a WAN IP address. * Power-cycle Modem and router.
After determining the WAN mode, it is time to configure the Router
1. Connect the Modem to the WAN port of the router. Connect the computer to the LAN port 2. Go to Start->Run. Type "cmd" on the Run window. 3. I have a DGL-4100 behind a Linksys DSL router 2 networks don't.


zSB(3,3) Installing a Two Router Network Installing a router to work as the second one on a home network requires special configuration. Do the following on the second router to ensure it (and the devices attached) function properly:
    1. Connect as local device or bridge - If connecting the second router via Ethernet cable, plug it into one of the LAN ports on the first router. If connecting the second router wirelessly, ensure the second router is set for client mode. Note that some home wireless routers do not support client mode; these must be connected by cable. Check your router documentation for details on its client mode configuration support.

    2. Check / change IP address - Most home network routers use a default IP address setting. Often, these default IP addresses will not work in a two router environment. Check the second router's IP address value and reset it if necessary to work within the valid address range of the first router (and to not conflict with any other device on the network).

    3. Disable DHCP - To avoid IP address conflicts between all of the devices on the home network, only one of your two routers should assign addresses via DHCP. All mainstream routers provide an option to disable DHCP as part of the router's configuration screens.

Instead of adding a second wired router to an existing network, consider adding a network switch instead. A switch accomplishes the same goal of extending the size of a network, but it does not require any IP address or DHCP configuration, greatly simplifying configuration.

TRENDnet TEW-432BRP router cannot obtain IP through DHCP


it seems that ur PC & cable modem configuration is ok, now the problem is with ur router WAN interface configuration. the problem would be one out of 2 - first to check whether ur router wan interface is configured properly to obtain IP address from DHCP (if possible, u can give the static ip address with same series as cable modem) second to check with ur ISP.

 Open the web browser

Home > Wireless

MAC Address-
The default MAC Address is set to the WAN’s physical interface MAC address on the Broadband Router. It is not recommended that you change the default MAC address unless required by your ISP.
Clone

Please remember that D-Link AirPlus G wireless devices are pre-configured to connect together, right out of the box, with their default settings.For a typical wireless setup at home (as shown above), please do the following:
1) You will need broadband Internet access (a Cable or DSL-subscriber line into
your home or office)
2) Consult with your Cable or DSL provider for proper installation of the modem
3) Connect the Cable or DSL modem to the DI-524 Wireless Broadband Router
(see the printed Quick Installation Guide included with your router.)
4) If you are connecting a desktop computer to your network, install the D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 wireless PCI adapter into an available PCI slot on your desktop computer. You may also install the DWL-G520, or the DWL-520. (See the printed Quick Installation Guide included with the network adapter.)
5) Install the D-Link DWL-G630 wireless Cardbus adapter into a laptop computer.
(See the printed Quick Installation Guide included with the DWL-G630.)
6) Install the D-Link DFE-530TX+ adapter into a desktop computer. The four Ethernet LAN ports of the DI-524 are Auto MDI/MDIX and will work with both Straight-Through and Cross-Over cable. (See the printed Quick Installation Guide included with the DFE-530TX+.)

Using the Configuration Menu

Whenever you want to configure your network or the
DI-524, you can access the Configuration Menu by
opening the web-browser and typing in the IP Address
of the DI-524. The DI-524 default IP Address is shown
bellow:
-Open the web browser

Choose PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) if your ISP uses a PPPoE connection. Your ISP will provide you with a username and password. This option is typically used for DSL services. Select Dynamic PPPoE to obtain an IP address automatically for your PPPoE connection. Select Static PPPoE to use a static IP address for your PPPoeE connection.

PPPoE- Choose this option if your ISP uses PPPoE. (Most DSL users will select this option.)

Dynamic PPPoE- receive an IP Address automatically from your ISP.

Static PPPoE-you have an assigned (static) IP Address.

User Name- Your PPPoE username provided by your ISP.

Retype Password- Re-enter the PPPoE password

Service Name- Enter the Service Name provided by your ISP (optional).

IP Address- This option is only available for Static PPPoE. Enter the static IP Address for the PPPoE connection.

Primary DNS Address- Primary DNS IP address provided by our ISP

Secondary DNS Address- This option is only available for Static PPPoE. Enter the static IP Address for the PPPoE connection.

Maximum Idle Time- Enter a maximum idle time during which Internet connection is maintained during inactivity. To diable this feature, enable Autoreconnect.

MTU- Maximum Transmission Unit-1492 is the default setting-you may need to change the MTU for optimal performance with your specific ISP.

Auto-reconnect- If enabled, the DI-524 will automatically connect to your ISP after your system is restarted or if the PPPoE connection is dropped.

LAN is short for Local Area Network. This is considered your internal network. These are the IP settings of the LAN interface for the DI-524. These settings may be referred to as Private settings. You may change the LAN IP address if needed. The LAN IP address is private to your internal network and cannot be seen on the Internet.

IP Address- The IP address of the LAN interface. The default IP address is: 192.168.0.1.

Subnet Mask- The subnet mask of the LAN interface. The default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

Local Domain- This field is optional. Enter in the local domain name.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Control Protocol. The DI-524 has a built-in DHCP server.
The DHCP Server will automatically assign an IP address to the computers on the LAN/
private network. Be sure to set your computers to be DHCP clients by setting their TCP/
IP settings to “Obtain an IP Address Automatically.” When you turn your computers on,
they will automatically load the proper TCP/IP settings provided by the DI-524. The
DHCP Server will automatically allocate an unused IP address from the IP address pool
to the requesting computer. You must specify the starting and ending address of the IP
address pool.

DHCP Server- Select Enabled or Disabled. The default setting is Enabled.
Starting
IP Address- The starting IP address for the DHCP server’s IP assignment
Ending
IP Address- The ending IP address for the DHCP server’s IP assignment
Lease Time- The length of time for the IP lease. Enter the Lease time. The
default setting is one hour

Glad to hear the new one is working (it's likely or at least possible, that the old one is simply mis-configured - resetting back to it's factory defaults and starting from scratch should help with the bridging issue)

No connectivity to internet


Hi,
Looks like when you reset the router/mdm you have los all yur configuration and back to the default factory settings.

Bridge the modem first .
1. In your web browser browse to »<your mdoms deault gateway> This address will be found in your manual of your modem
2,Depending on your modem make sure you use "Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used)"

3. Click Save Changes.

4. Then connect the router

5.Configure the router for PPPoE using your ISP uid/pass
6.Configure your wireless using WEP(if applicable)

7.after all configuration shut the desktop,laptop,router,mdm and pwr them in seg..first modem and then router and then your desktop or laptop

Step 1 Log into the web-based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) in your web browser. The username is admin (all lowercase) and the password is blank (nothing). Note: The address 192.168.0.1 is NOT on the Internet. The web-based configuration is built-in to the router. Step 2 Click the Home tab and click the WAN button. Dynamic IP Address is the default value, however, if Dynamic IP Address is not selected as the WAN type, select Dynamic IP Address by clicking on the radio button. Click Clone Mac Address. Click on Apply and then Continue to save the changes. Step 3 Power cycle the cable modem and router: Turn the cable modem off (first) Turn the router off Leave them off for 2 minutes** Turn the cable modem on (first) Wait until you get a solid cable light on the cable modem Turn the router on Wait 30 seconds ** If you have a Motorola (Surf Board) modem, leave off for at least 5 minutes. Step 4 Follow step 1 and log back into the web configuration. Click the Status tab and click the Device Info button. If you do not have a public IP address under the WAN heading, click on DHCP Renew and then click Continue. It may take a few minutes to obtain an IP address. Static Cable Connection The instructions below are for users who were given a static IP address from their ISP (Cox Business, TDS DSL, PacBell Business, Interbaun, InReach, Inficad, FlashCom, DCAnet, and Cavalier). Step 1 Log into the web based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) in your web browser.
