Usually, there are 3 causes for this :
1) A virus can cause the problem. Updated and run your Anti-virus software in Safe Mode.
(Free AVG 8.0 is a great virus protection program)

2) Power off the computer:
The cable going from the CDROM to the system board may be loose, reseat it and restart the computer.

3) the CDROM drive may be malfunctioning.

File will not rewrite to cd, computer does not reconize cd installed

Can it play a music CD or retrieve data from an existing one?
You can click start, my computer and at least see if your DVD
drive (D: usually) is there. If the inserted DVD or CD is good, it
will show free and used space. Your drive may have gone bad.
Some computer centers have walk in clinics and may be able
to determine that.

Code 39 dvd drive wont even reconize but will open and close

Hi. This is a registry problem which pertains to DVD/CD ROM drive. Please follow the troubleshooting procedure below.

1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SYSTEM
  • CurrentControlSet
  • Control
  • Class
  • {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

  • UpperFilters
  • LowerFilters
  • UpperFilters.bak
  • LowerFilters.bak
5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer

8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

My computer doesn't recognize the cd\dvd drive.

Try going to Dell and checking for updated drivers for the CD/DVD drive. Also check you bios to see if its even being reconized by the system bios. If not then the drives electronics has probably failed and it will need to be replaced. Also before doing this go to control panel and click on systems then device manager and remove any drivers listed for the drive by right clicking on the drive name and selecting porperties. Delete the drives drivers and restart the system window should reload the appropriate driver automatically. If same error occurs then check the bios to see if the system sees it. Check all power cables going to the drive.

My computer no longer reconizes the cd burner model 38631

Have you tried to update or roll back the drivers? On your desktop select start, click control panel, double click system, select the hardware tab, click device manager, click the + sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click on your cd burner, click properties, select the drivers tab, try both Update driver and roll back driver.

4600c not operating system error message bootmanager missing

You might have to go to the BIOS of your computer to ensure your drive is recognised. Once it shows there, make sure you change the Drive as your first boot device.

Will not give x85 as option and won't reconize intall disk.

What Operating system? And you shouldn't really need the disk. The needed drivers should be in support on the manufacturer's website. Find and download the files. Unzip the files so they can be installed.(they should self-extract to a new folder) And to install the driver(s) through Device Manager, select that folder instead of the D:/ E:/ or whatever your CD drive is.

Won't reconize DVD burner

Well, the CD ribon cable goes into the IDE 2 slot on the Mainboard and the furthest connector on the other end is the master, the second one closest to the board is the Slave connector. The CD drive has a jumper on the back between where the ribbon and the power connector go, on the case some where it should have a diagram showing the jumper setting to put it in as master or slave. Set it accordingly.

Same with Hard drives.

If the Hard drive has a diferent Cable like a SATA, then be sure to get a SATA as the new one.

Now the IDE cables may be bad check them for damage just to be on the safe side.

Dell computer

Could be a dirty sensor. Get a can of air and try to blow it out. Might need to try that a couple of times. Try reloading the drivers for the cd. They sometimes get corrupted.
