I light the pilot light, hold it till it stays on by itself, it starts to heat up, and then when its about to switch over to commence full heating the pilot light goes out.

Evidently when the flame comes on, it is pulling the flame away from the pilot thermocouple. You may need to take a small brush and clean your pilot assembly, then take the thermocouple off and replace it. You can also use compressed air to clean the pilot if that is available.

I have switched my unit over to heat and only cool air blows out. Is there a reset button I can try before calling out a repair man.

It depends on what type of unit you have if it is gas or electric. If it is gas your pilot light is probably not lit .take the top door of your furnace off look under the burner and see if there is a small flame lit . if not it is simple to light turn the knob on the gas valve to pilot then push in on the know while holding a match at the pilot head to find the pilot head trace the small aluminuim pipe from the gas valve to where it ends that will be the pilot head once the pilot lights count to 10 slowly then switch the knob to the on position and your set make sure the t-stat is in the off position before lighting the pilot light.

If it is electric heat strips or a heat pump there is nothing to do other than turn t-stat to heat and make sure all 220 breakers are in the on position.

I need to know how to light the pilot light on my gas furnace.

What needs to happen that may not be obvious is that you have to heat the thermal tube long enough for it to expand and open the gas valve. No heat and the system should shut down flow immediately.

The thermal tube is copper in color and runs between the gas valve and the pilot flame.

So, there is an override. usually spring loaded (heavily) and you press some button or know, this manually opens the fuel valve.....You light the pilot, still holding button......Pilot lights, holding, holding...maybe 10 to 15 seconds.

Then the secret is that you SLOWLY let up on the button, observing the pilot....If it starts to go out, push the button all the way in and continue heating the thermal tube. Soon, you should be able to release the button, and the pilot remains lit. You are good to go, and you can open the gas valve the rest of the way, for normal use. (usually past the pilot position.

I HAVE A RUUD SILHOUETTE GAS FURNANCE. The pilot light keeps blowing out. When I light the pilot flame it seems to work perfectly at ignition. As the Manual instructs, I hold down the ignition switch for...

Short answer, yes. However you could have another problem. Replace the thermocouple that keeps the pilot lit. You can get a universal one at any good hardware or farm store. Make sure the new thermocouple is well into the pilot flame. If the blower knocks out the pilot flame again, I would be suspecting cross contamination from a crack in the heat exchanger. As the exchanger heats up, it may be causing a small crack to open and allows the blower to extinguish the flame. It may also be causing a leak of Carbon Monoxide into the heated room air. I would get it checked out very quickly.

Heating isn't working, can't find the red button to relight the pilot

Many times the knob to turn the gas on on the valve is also the pilot knob. Turn it to pilot and hold it down while you light the pilot. Hold it for up to a minute and release. If the pilot stays on then turn it to on. If not you need a new thermocouple.

The heater in my central heating is not getting turn on but the fresh air and cooling is getting turn on

Check the pilot light.Older standing pilot systems use thermocouples to verify the pilot is burning before the gas valve opens. If the pilot wont stay lit replace the thermocouple.
Newer systems light the pilot. On a call for heat the igniter lights the pilot. When the heat is verified the gas valve opens . Some systems use an circuit board with flashing led lights to help troubleshooting.

I have a Ruud deluxe 80 plus heater. The unit is running, the pilot light is lit, still no heat.

repost with more specific . motor aka fan is running?stat is set to heat and max heat? how old? general progression is as follows. stat says its cold. signal is sent to gas valve to open. gas valve looks to see if pilot is lit via thermocouple. if pilot is lit then main valve opens and burner lights. shortly thereafter sufficient heat builds up to trip heat sensor that turns on fan and blows hot air into house.many times a tripped safty causes a default fan response. aka when you show up the fan is on 24 7 . that equals a failed safety and needs a pro tech to see why saftyfailed.
