Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

BLU-RAY Hey Gamefixer, Another ? for ya. Youv'e done quite a bit of work on PS3 blu-Ray drives so I firgured youd be the perfect person to ask this. I have a drive thats not spinning the disk. The laser comes on shoot a red beam four times and then stops...the disk never spins. I'm thinking its the disk spin motor assembley with board thats gone out. I swapped drives and it works fine so that tells me the drive board is good...it just seems to come back to the disk spin motor and board. If you think this is it do you have any extra you could sell me? I'll send you the number off the board as it seems there are several different ones. Thanks

Cool....I was just trying to play a regular dvd......same situation though? I had the covers off and it would feed the disk in and from there I guess it should have started spinning but it didnt and I saw the red laser shoot 4 times and then cut off. Well.......thanks for the tip on the laser hook up. I'll see if I come out cheaper just getting the laser or just buying the whole player. Later

Hey robhyper,
The Blu-Ray diode is blown. With a healthy laser when the disk is seated by the load mechinism the laser will power on a bright purple beam at first and start spinning the disk if one is detected. If it doesn't detect Blu-Ray media then it turns to the standard laser (red) and it will bounce up and down a few times trying to focus. You need good ol part number KES-400A which is a new laser.

Originally I drew the same conclusion you did and wasted a bunch of money on the part KEM-400AAA which is the whole laser and spin assembly. You don't need all that. Just get a good laser and carefully install it and you should be good to go. Be very careful installing it though as it is VERY susceptible to Electrostatic Discharge. There are only a few sellers that have this part. the best thing to do is go to ebay and type in the part number. But beware, make sure they have a guarantee on them. I just bought 5 of them and not one works properly. There is one seller http://myworld.ebay.com/jimmyestore he is a little more expensive, but at least the lasers work!! Good luck!!

On my ps3 80gb system, the disc never spins up. I don't have a problem replacing the part myself, but I don't know what part to order. can you help. Thanks! Mike

Hi there, the PS3 blu ray is a bit of a complex device. Basically the way it work is before the disc is even spun the laser reads and detects what kind of media is inserted into the PS3. As you are saying the disc is not spinning there are 2 possible causes for this.
1. The blu ray lens has gone and is unable to read blu ray discs, hence the disc does not spin as none is detected.
2. The actual motor that spins the disc has gone. This is a much more unlikely reason, the blu ray lens is a common problem on the PS3.

As a shot in the dark you could try a laser lens cleaner but make sure it is suitable for blu ray. If this does not work you are going to have to purchase a new blu ray drive. You can get them for around £70 on ebay but you need to make sure you get the right one. Check your PS3 model number and google it to find which drive you have.

Tip

PS3 Won't accept discs - Here is the fix!

This tip is for people who have already disassembled their Play Station 3 console and tried to replace the laser in the Blu ray optical drive.

If you replace the laser and then reassemble the Blu ray optical drive and the drive will no longer accept discs (like there is something blocking the disc) follow these steps to resolve.

(NOTE: if your PS3 is not accepting discs because the disc just won't push in, not like there is something solid blocking the drive, or your drive is making "grinding noises" refer to this tip: http://www.fixya.com/support/r4321102-bluray_drive_ps3_makes_grinding_noise )

Remove the metal casing of the Blu ray optical if you have not already done so. This requires removing the three black screws and the two silver screws on the bottom of the Blu ray optical drive.

With the metal casing removed, locate the 5 black screws on the top of the Blu ray optical drive to remove. There are two on either side and one at the back in the middle.

Keep the drive together for now (do not take the top off) and reattach to your Play Sation 3 console.

Turn on your PS3 and wait for it to power up.

Now, take the top of the Blu ray optical drive by “unfolding it” so the top of the drive rests on the PS3 power supply.

With the top off, hit the Eject button on the front of your PS3.

The drive gears should “pop” back into place.

Turn off your PS3 and reassemble the Blu ray drive. You should test your Blu ray drive first before reassembling the whole PS3.

Blu ray not playing

Hey there, it sounds like your blu ray laser has become faulty. Unfortunately this is a very common problem for the PS3 and there is not much that can be done about it. New lasers can be bought but they are difficult to fix. You could buy a new drive from somewhere like ebay at a cost of around £60. They are much easier to fit than the lasers themselves but you must make sure you keep the circuit board on your blu ray drive and swap it to the replacement drive as this is paired to the motherboard and will not work if it is not with the original motherboard.

My ps3 will still play movies but not games, what may b the prob?

You probably need a blu-ray drive. A blu-ray drive is essentially three parts, a CD type player, A DVD type player and a Blu-ray type player. Any one or combination can fail. DVD type games may work but not Blu-ray movies. Blu-ray games OK but not DVDs, etc. a blu-ray drive needs alignment so this is a sevice shop issue.

My ps3 plays movies but wont recognize games

The PS3 uses a different laser for DVD's, Blu-Ray disks, and CD's. It's quite likely that just the Blu-ray diode has crapped out. have you upgraded to firmware 3.10

For the player to work perfectly the lens needs to be clean. One piece of dirt can cripple your PS3 and end up with your PS3 not playing games. This dirt needs to be cleaned off the lens occasionally to avoid you having ps3 problems loading games.

Try these steps to resolve this issue:

You could be facing a lens related issue or corrupted firmware problem

try this

1. Update your firmware (if you aren't running the latest already). Yup, this overwrites some of system software that may have been corrupted.

2. First, back up your game saves, and any music you have on your HDD. Format your PS3, this fixes corrupted files on the HDD by forcing the PS3 to rewrite them.

3. Try cleaning the blu-ray drive lens with a Blu Ray Lens Cleaner

if this does not help, i suggest should be send to Sony for repairs in case your PS3 is under warranty your replacement drive may be covered still you need to check with PS3 customer support, Laser replacement would cost you around $130.

Hope this helps, and please do rate my solution, Happy Holidays and Happy gaming ahead!

Please help me, i beg you

One of the first things I'd suggest to you is to try cleaning the lens. It's possible a little bit of dust or smoke etc has clouded it up a bit. I'm pretty sure DVD lens cleaning discs will not work, but don't quote me on that. Anyway a blu-ray lens cleaner should run anywhere from just over 10 to probably around 20$US. In fact I think Amazon has a special on one from Maxell.

If that fails you may very well indeed have a problem with your blu-ray drive if it's in warranty I'd contact Sony A.S.A.P.

On a side note does it read DVD's CD's or blu-ray movies or is it only Blu-ray games?
