Question about Olympus Stylus 700 / 700 Digital Camera

Format or not?

I've taken loads of pictures with my camera and have had no problem in the past with loading them onto my laptop. But i have recently moved to university and took some pictures with no problems until i tried to load them onto my laptop. i could easily look at them on the camera but then put the memory card into my laptop reader and the folder said that it was empty, but there should've been my photos in there! I tried turning it off and on again with both the laptop and camera but the same kept happening.

I then put the card back in the camera and when i turn it on the screen says 'card error' and also gives the options of 'power off' or 'format'.

I'm worried about formatting my camera because i may lose all my photos that aren't on my laptop yet.

I dont understand why this has suddenly happened now, and what can i do to fix it?! should i format my camera? is there a way of getting the pictures off it first then formatting it?! Hope you can help :)

To help prevent corruption, try to safely remove the camera before unpluging from the computer.

How do I empty a full card

Loading the pictures onto your computer simply copies them, leaving the originals on the camera's memory card. To clear the card, format it in the camera by using the format command in the recording menu, as described in the "Formatting a CF Card" section of the manual (page 83 in my copy). If you need a manual, you may download a copy here.

Took a bit to find this this bad news in the manual but what happens now is to get the pictures from the internal memory to the computer as a down load you need to first insert a memory card format the memory card and load each picture from the internal memory onto the memory card one at a time once that is down then you can download the memory card to the computer then you will need to reformat the memory card and then go back into the internal memory erase each one of those images and format the internal memory. Now the GOOD news, you only have 10 pictures. Don't forget to do the formatting.

Get all pictures to your PC and format card on PC(FAT32).
Try to put it in the camera.
If it's not going to work, pins are bent inside the camera's card reader.
Needs service.

I just purchased a Powershot A1100 and cannot figure out how to load pictures onto the Memory card. Thanks

Are you trying to load pictures onto the card using a computer? It doesn't work that way. Format the card in the camera and have fun with your new camera.

Pictures will not upload to laptop.

I had a similar problem recently - the computer wasn't even recognising that it was plugged in. I eventually took the battery out and charged it up, then later it worked perfectly. I hope this is helpful to you.

Screen reading memory card not initialized

It sounds like your XD card is corrupted. How and why i couldn't tell you. You will need to get the pictures recovered from the card using a special software (image recovery software, can down load for free from some web sites, or some companies can try and do it for you) and then try and format the card in the camera. DO NOT FORMAT THE CARD BEFORE YOU RETRIVE YOUR IMAGES. If you do all traces of the images may be lost.

All the best and happy snapping.

I would recheck all of my settings on the camera. Go to the menu and check everything one by one. Your card may be damaged also. Do you have another card to try? Do you have your manual? If not you can to to www.olympus.com to download a new manual specifically for your camera and it may address this issue. Good luck.
