Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional for PC

1 Answer

Can not download any programs

I initially backed up my system onto external HD and then activated HP Restore Plus CD for restore. I then reinstalled Operating System. this solved my 'Ethernet' problem and allowed me to access the internet but when I did Restore using the restore wizard I got mostly shortcuts to my desktop which have no exe files. The files are not listed on my 'Add or Remove Programs' screen. I attemped to redownload from both the web and CDs but I can't download. I get an error message when clicking on 'Setup', 'error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writeable'. From the web the download just doesn't happen. I am stumped!

Hi,
The windows backup feature does not back up any installed programs , it would only backup up your data files , but no exe files. But you are not able to install a fresh copy of the programs over the internet and from the cd.
Try installing these programs from in safe mode of windows . To start the computer you need to press the F8 key a couple of times before windows starts up.
If the same is not working you need to redo the operating system once again

Thanks

To reinstall it. booting it doesn't work. So need to have reinstall. do I need a disk?

Yes, if you want to reinstall the copy of your Windows installed in your computer you need to have a Windows CD.

But try doing System Restore first on safe mode if you still can before doing a Windows reinstallation or repair to save money from buying a WIndows CD and from loosing all your files in your computer.

To do system restore on safe mode:

1. Restart your computer and when the Dell Logo comes up and keep pressing F8 until an option shows
2. Use arrows to navigate then choose safe mode
3. Click start button then choose All programs or Program depending on the Windows installed in your computer
4. Click on System tools then choose System Restore
5. Follow the intructions on the System Restore windows on how to restore your machine back to a previous date before this issue happen.
6. Your computer will automatically restart after restore is done

Hope this information will be helpful. Thank you for using FIXYA.

No installation cd

Many newer computers have a backup reinstall program on a partition of the original hard drive. While booting in Bios hit F10 or F12. Your should get boot options as well as the Recovery Install option. Before using the Reinstall option try using the System Restore. The computer automatically sets restore points and you can select "Last good settings" restore point. In "safe mode" you can access more options in Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. There you will find other dates which you can restore to.

If you cannot boot you can use a manufacturers recovery disk. Unlike a MS full version CD the recovery disc will reinstall all software and hardware back to the state it was in when it was new. Depending how old your computer is, you may have to do many downloads from Windows Update.
You can get a recovery reinstall CD from the computer manufacturer, or check with friends if any have the same brand computer as their disc may be compatible with your computer. The discs are manufacturer specific and will only work on the same brand computer.

Hi I have purchased a computer that was supplied by Currys as an OEM PC. Previous owner tried to reinstall OS using what I think is a different Vista disk..... the OEM key on side of PC is different...

The product-key was already entered when Vista was installed.
It is "too late" to change the product-key.
Take a "system restore checkpoint".
Then, try the "activation wizard".
If it does not activate, use System Restore to go "back" to that checkpoint date/time.

Or, contact the manufacturer of the computer.
They can supply a replacement set of "System Restore" CD/DVD disks for a small fee;
typically around $20, plus $20 for overnight-courier.

How do i set my toshiba laptop back to manufacturing settings without losing my windows 7 home premium

Unless you did a full system backup when after you loaded Windows 7 Home Premium, you will not be able to restore the system back to factory settings without losing W7HP.
Why are you trying to restore the laptop back to factory settings?

Do you want to create the CD?
If you are able to boot into windows then use the Recovery disk creator program.
If the computer is HP then look for HP program etc.

If i restore my dell inspiron 9400 to its original factory settings will it delete XP updated files received over the past couple of years and will it affect my security McAffe that i subscibe to?

Yes it will. I suggest that you download Windows XP SP2, and Windows XP SP3 and save to an external USB key or burn to a CD-R. If you save the downloads to your HD, restoring to factory settings will most likely overwrtite your HD. So with that. I also suggest that you backup all your personal data, such as documents, pictures, favorite, email contact list, emal messages, and any other personal data that you will need.

Once you have finished the restore to factory process, place the USB key or CD-R in the slots/drive, and install SP2 first, check no restart button, then install SP3. Reboot and now do your Windows Updates.

The reason I suggest sp2, then sp3 before running Windows update, is to save you time getting your unit back in production. If you did a Windows update after the restore to factory process, you would most likely be prompted to download and install SP2, then all the patches and updates would follow fro sp2. This way sp2 updates sp1, then sp3 updates sp2, and finally the updates and security patches for sp3 are all you need.

McAfee - Again download the software to a USB key or CD-R. Before you start the restore, open McAfee, select help, about, and print out or write down your subscription key. You will need these when you reinstall McAfee on your restored unit.

Hope this helps.............

God Bless !!!!!!!

Missing Control Panel+Run Command+Active Desktop

HI! QUESTION. HAVE YOU, OR CAN YOU RE-INSTALL WIN98 FROM CD? IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST SOLUTION MIGHT BE TO DO A RE-INSTALL OF THE ENTIRE WIN98 FROM THE CD. IT SOUNDS LIKE THE FILES MISSING MIGHT HAVE BEEN PERMANENTLY DELETED AND IF YOU CAN LOCATE THEM ON YOUR COMPUTER, YOU MAY HAVE TO RE-INSTALL THE 98 OS TO GET BACK RUNNING. ONE THOUGHT, THIS MIGHT BE AN EXCELLENT TIME TO UPGRADE TO WIN XP,SP2 WHICH IS AN EXCELLENT PROGRAM AND HAS BETTER RESTORE FEATURES. I PERSONALLY USE XP,SP2 ON MY ONE DESKTOP MACHINE AND IT RUNS MY WIRELESS NETWORK AND HAS BEEN VERY STABLE. I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS YOU. IF YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS, PLEASE REPLY. I'LL HELP.
