You are not alone with this problem. Some lines (like mine) run vertically rather than horizontally. The solution - sue HP. These screens have a known fault ie the Nvidia graphics chip is known to be the culprit. The company knows all about this issue but expect us to pay to put it right - sue them, you can do it online for around £35 (UK).

I had an lcd moniter that had red lines through it so I replaced the tower and the lines went away. Although, this is a laptop instead of a moniter. They are similar but different because the display is attached together on a laptop. A lot of people would rather fix the display or throw away the laptop. The lines running through a display happens when an lcd inverter is giving up or burning out. The colors on the display are affected and the ending result is faulty lines or a blank screen. http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/08/17/bad-video-on-lcd-screen/ There are ways to test them but it takes time and equipment http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm I have also found some lcd inverters that are not so much costly http://www.yallstore.com/laptop-notebook-inverter-c-720_1058.html?filter_id=9&gclid=CPi149S44JYCFRsRagod3RZOPA

Check for bad caps with bulging tops/bottom seals in the power supply first, very common problem in all LCD monitors as you can see in my albums here:

Pavilion F1523 15" LCD Monitor: will not power up...

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed HP monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Open the screen and on the backside there are two pcb's.
Left is the power conversion unit and right is the hardware for the display. I had the same problem. So on the left one you will find a lot of capacitors (ELCO). Look for those ones with a rounded top. note their capacity and current (most fragile are the 16V470uF and 16V1000uF). Replace the ELCO's with rounded tops. NOTE THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SIDES!!! DONT SWAP THESE or you will end up with another one with a rounded top. Solder it all together and close the screen. Your problemo is solvento!

A thin horizontal line across the screen

I know I have seen thin lines in the past on older CRT monitors, these are usually wires which support the aperture grill. LCD is just a panel so this must be something different. What color is the line? It is probably an error in the scanning process.
