So i've had this laptop for about 1.5 years and it just started doing this.
I would work on it and all of a sudden the HDD would just turn off. I would be like Double U Tee Eff and then it would start back up again. It was fine and dandy. Not the perfect experience, but it was working.
Well after a couple times of doing that it started doing it and then not restarting at all.
I thought it could've been a virus, since my friend's laptop developed the same symptoms at about the same time, but i couldn't explain how a virus will work like that even outside of windows... it would not let the HDD start up even at the bios level :(

Maybe you just need a new hard drive? It could have just crapped out. Also, someone could have dropped your laptop, meaning it could be a mechanical problem, something with a moving part.
