-   My computer keeps shutting down as well. It seems to be getting hot (and smells kinda hot) so I think it might be overheating. I bought a cooling pad and that didn't make it better. What can I do if it is overheating?-   Kelly12

-   My computer seems to do the same thing. Except I'll be doing different things, at times i'll leave the computer idle and then it just shuts off like within a mintue of me not using it!

idk what to think, i mean i just got this laptop yesterday (Fri June 13, 2008) and it cut off on me then too, but only once.

Today it cuts off on me, then i'm sitting there trying to figure out what to do, i'm pushing buttons, sometimes it comes back, but other times it takes a long while. i'll push the the shut off button and sometimes nothing happens. When it comes back and i get to my desktop it shuts back off again.

This is really annoying, and i can't figure out if its vista or is just a hardware problem or if its running hot.
I have an HP special edition laptop, the verve one.

I'm just upset from all of this.

My computer keeps shutting down I bought a new battery and cord. Yesterday I had 100% battery and did not use it anymore until this morning, but it told me that now I have 0% battery and to use power outlet to stay on. I have used power outlet and it will not come back on at all. I hit the reset button and it still won't come back on. I see the lighting bolt light come on when I try to power on, and sometimes when I am not using it the the first light is always blue and flashing. Help Me Please!

I have a toshiba laptop which was unexpectedly switching off. The laptop was 2 years old. I did lots of searching online to discover this is a VERY COMMON ISSUE.

The problem is, dust blocks the heatsink. When I took my computer to pieces, I found a strip of dust half an inch (1cm) thick covering the back of the heatsink which prevented air flow. If your laptop is a couple of years old, this could be the problem. When I removed this dust, the problem disappeared.

If you are computer savvy, then try the following - if not, take it down to a computer shop!

1) Remove the 5 screws holding down the heat sink cover and processor cover. These are on the bottom of the laptop, in the centre, at the back.

2) Remove the 3 screws which hold in the heat sink in place.

3) Remove the heatsink

4) Take the dust out

5) Re-assemble

a note: be careful not to get dust in the thermal paste on the cpu - unless you have replacement paste.

Good Luck!

I would suggest that the power supply is going. i had a desktop that would do the same thing, I put another P/S in and I have not had the problem since.Tthe battery is a clean, stable DC power source as opposed to the P/S that is a regulated AC/DC transformer. Worth a try to plug it into a UPS and try again as the UPS supplies a cleaner AC source.

check screensaver/energy saving settings in control panel and set to two hours or longer.
if problem persists may be hardware issue
ie. overheating

might be a lot of things (with the little info you provided).

Is your cooling still okay? Do you have the same problem when using your computer for other things that heat it up? (like gaming or 3d rendering?)

or is it just your computer shutting down because it isn't 'used' for a while? Like the sleep mode?

How I solve my Acer TraveMate Laptop computer from shuts down due to over heat problem.

  1. Confirm the cooler fan still in good condition ( it still can spin when the laptop become heat).
  2. Power Off, looking at the laptop bottom side, find the cover plate that cover the memory ram & wifi module,
  3. remove all the screw and then remove the cover plate,
  4. looking for the cooler fan connector wire, (3 pin fan connector), don't know which one ? please refer to http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/Motherboard_(CPU)_3_Pin_Fan_Connector
  5. use a wire cutter and CUT THE YELLOW WIRE
  6. test run, make sure now the cooler fan always spin in high speed,
  7. use nhc ( http://www.pbus-167.com/ ) to check the temp. it show that the cpu temp 70~75, hdd temp 50~55

Whell if nothing helps then you should try this. You can go to control pannel and open power options, and there set the parameters so, that the note book never turn off or go to sleep or go to hibernate when plugged. You have four places so just set them to never and that sholud fix the problem :). Was this helpfull? *I did this to my notebook and it never turn off, or something when plugged!)

Go to bios. Leave your computer on for a while. if it turns off by itself, its overheating,Take a vac and clean out your computer. If that fixes it, it was dust in the fan.

Shake your computer. If that makes it turn off, something is loose.

Run a live linux cd. If that works, you have a software problem. If not, you have junky a processor or your memory is bad.

I charge 20 bucks to do this

I have an old Acer series 220 which I keep for emergencies. Well the emergency has come because the hard drive on my PC has decided to quit. But then I found the Acer kept shutting down, sometimes after only a few minutes, due to overheating. The fan didn't seem to be working at all. I found a solution!
I am supporting the laptop on its front and back edges on blocks of wood so it is 2 inches off the desktop. Then I am using an ordinary domestic fan to blow air sideways through the gap under the laptop. I was amazed to find this simple technique cools the laptop so effectively that it doesn't even feel warm any more, whereas before it felt really hot after a few minutes.
Not a very technical solution but the laptop now keeps running for hours without a problem. Good enough until my PC is repaired.

(You can support the laptop at its side edges but then you'll have the fan blowing directly at you from behind the laptop.)

it can be many things like sleep mode, hibernation which can be changed to suit;but your'e prob seems to be either compatability conflicts or lack of physical ram.
seems to me you pc reverts to compatabity saftey mode to protect pc.
On software that causes your problem you either need to change resources or uninstall and reinstall(this way auto config and use different resource)
If its lack of mem install more memory(ram)

I have the same issue. My computer used to run fine and then every once in a while it would shut off randomly. Slowly but surely the lapse of time would get shorter of when it would shut down to now I can't even boot it up before it shuts right back off. I noticed that it runs a few seconds longer when I'm using just the battery as opposed to the power cable, but all-in-all it still shuts down on me. Someone had mentioned a faulty solder? What is that?

Comment by AstroFrog, posted on Nov 15, 2007

My acer aspire 3000 works fine until i run certain software like messenger and WMP and shuts down randomly without notice, it is not a heat problem as for it also shuts down when trying to play games or run a disk checkup. this problem doesn't let me use the recovery disks, because it shuts down during the process and last time the tech guy had to connect my HDD to another PC to install the disks
