Ok lets start off with this are you running a wireless b a wireless g or a wireless b/g settings this may have some effect on your laptops modem depending on the model of it
also are you running a secured server if so turn it off and see if you can connect chances are you might be able to if not then please state you model and make of both the laptop and the wireless router in question and I will do my best to help you out.
