Is there a basic way to set up margin settings? I have a test Friday and don't know what type of typewriter; I will be testing on.

Well this is a little late for your test, but, for future reference - in general for electronic machines you need to position the printhead where you want the margin set then hit the appropriate mar. set key.
to move the printhead past where the mar. is set you need to hit the 'mar rel' key and use the spacebar or backspace key to position the printhead. some machines don't have a "mar rel" key and on these machines just using the space and back sp. keys will do it.

How do I increase the margins on the typewriter

To set a margin beyond the left or right margin, move the carrier (or cursor) to that margin, press the Margin Release key, then proceed to move the carrier (or cursor) to the desired position. Then, press the Left or Right margin key to set the new margin. A beep will sound indicating the new margin has been set. When you set a new left or right margin, the previous margin is automatically cleared.

Alternatively, you can type beyond the right margin by pressing the Margin Release key and then continue typing when the carrier (or cursor) stops at the right margin. To type beyond the left margin, press the Margin Release key and then the Backspace key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the position where you want to start typing.

How do I reset the margins on a Nakajima typewriter model AE-740

If you want to set the machine back to factory settings do the following... switch the machine OFF.
While holding down the Margin Release key switch the power back ON. The machine will begin typing a pre-programmed test page....let it run for 5 seconds...switch the machine back OFF.
Give it 5 seconds and switch it back On and settings will be back to factory settings...be aware this will clear all memory of any docs or info you had in memory.

5. Turn typewriter off and then on again
all settings will now be cleared.

Setting right margain

some typewriters just have a beep to let you know the right margin is coming. the keyboard might not lock up when it gets to the right margin. you might be able to type right through it. also you may be setting it too close to the left margin.
