Suppose the length of time taken is T and the wind speed is W. Also we will assume that the ground speed of the plane is exactly its top speed plus or minus the wind speed, with no losses anywhere. So

(180 - W) * T = 100

(180 + W) * T = 135

180T - WT = 100

180T +WT = 135

Add these 2 equations together

360T = 235 so T = 0.653 hrs or 39.17 min

Now subtract equation 1 from equation 2

2WT = 35 This is the equation you ask for in your question

W = 35 / 2 / 0.653 or 26.8 mph

Check this

(180 - 26.8) * 0.653 = 100 OK

(180 - W) * T = 100

Definition

A mathematical statement used to evaluate a value. An equation can use any combination of mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication. An equation can be already established due to the properties of numbers (2 + 2 = 4), or can be filled solely with variables which can be replaced with numerical values to get a resulting value. For example, the equation to calculate return on sales is: Net income ÷ Sales revenue = Return on Sales. When the values for net income and sales revenue are plugged into the equation, you are able to calculate the value of return on sales.

There are many types of mathematical equations.

1. Linear Equations y= mx + b (standard form of linear equation)

2. Quadratic Equations y= ax^2+bx+c

3. Exponential Equations y= ab^x

4. Cubic Equations y=ax^3+ bx^2+cx+d

5. Quartic Equations y= ax^4+ bx^3+ cx^2+ dx+ e

6. Equation of a circle (x-h)^2+(y-k)^2= r^2

7. Constant equation y= 9 (basically y has to equal a number for it to be a constant equation).

You have to put the equations into matrix form first. To do this, each variable has one column in the first matrix and you fill in the co-efficients for the variables. The second matrix has one column and contains all the numbers.

{ 2 -1 1 -1} = Matrix A

{-1} = Matrix B

{x=-2} = A*(B^-1)

The TI-30XA does not offer any symbolic algebra or equation solving functions. You will need to do some work on paper. However, its not super difficult.

Solving quadratic equations (finding the roots) involve three steps:

You should exercise this simplification with different examples until you can do it in your sleep. The goal is to get a form x² + px + q = 0, where in the above example case, p = -1 and q = -2.

Now, use the memory places #0 and #1 to store p and q, as in:

-2 [STO] 1

Next, you should determine the discriminant D = p² - 4q of the equation using your TI-30XA calculator. Having put the two values into the memory comes in handy here:

Note, we put D into memory place #2, we will need it again later.

Now check the displayed value D:

You can add these equations just like you would numbers

3x + 2y = 7

5x - 2y = 1

-----------------------

8x =8

x=1

Now plug x = 1 back into either equation and you can solve for y

Y = 2

When you add the 2 equations together the +2y and the -2y cancel

out
