Question about Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive
One day I turned on my external drive, the data light was flasing for a wile and off. The hard drive enclosure was very hot and a burning smell...
I turned off the power right away and left the drive cooling down.
How could I know if my hard drive was dead.
It's possible the drive died, but my first guess (especially because of the burning smell) would be that the circuitry that connects the drive to the USB port is bad. In my experience, the only time a hard drive will "burn" is when I hold a flame to it. Hard drives generally don't go bad in that manner.
My recommendation would be to take the drive out and visually inspect both it and the enclosure. You'll probably find some scorch marks on the circuit board. If so, I'd contact Western Digital (if the drive is newer) and they should replace it. WD is *very* good about backing their products.
Regardless, try the drive in another external drive reader (ask a friend or co-worker if they have one) and see if the drive still works. If you're not hearing any odd noises or "clanking", the drive's integrity is probably still okay.
Hope this helps - remember to rate :)
