Resolution should be 1280x1024.
Colours 16 bit.
Motherboard drivers installed.
Redo the graphics driver installation by completely removing the current one, and then use the install-CD for the graphics card. The installation could take place while you are in VGA-mode - press F8 during first BIOS-screen - to avoid disturbance.

Most laptops have a "toggle":
* output only to internal screen,
* output only to external VGA port,
* output to both internal and external.

Just "toggle" (maybe 'FN' key at the same time as one of the twelve F(unction) keys?) through these 3 modes.

P.S. What manufacturer and model-name and model-number of laptop?

They should already be on if you've plugged it in properly.
Green jack hole in your sound card is 'rule of thumb'.
1/8" jack I believe, to the 'audio in' jack in you monitor.

I am trying to connect my philips brilliance 170p monitor to my dell laptop.....the monitor keeps saying 'no video input'....help?

After plugging it in, you'll need to actually tell your laptop to use the 2nd display and select an appropriate resolution. Go to display settings, select 2nd display, and select "extend display to this display".

Yes, right click on the desktop, go to properties > settings > advanced,
Go to the monitor tab and try changing the refresh rate to something a little higher IE if it is set at 60, try 70.
