The s7000 has three different display modes: Screen, viewfinder, and off. Screen is for looking at the big screen, viewfinder is for looking through the digital viewfinder, and off should turn off all the displays. Try pressing the DISP button once. Have you tried pressing the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Most cameras and video recorders now display picture either through the viewfinder or the LCD screen.
Your camera model allows the same. Although if you turn the lcd screen towards the subject (screen faces the same direction as the lens) then the viewfinder switches on.

Could you explain in a better way your problem?
The XSi don't show the menus on the viewfinder, it only shows on the back screen.
You can shut if of by hitting the "DISP" button just at the left side of the viewfinder.
You can also enable the screen to go ON or OFF, when you go close your face to the viewfinder, so the screen will be OFF when you get close the viewfinder, and ON when you move back your face

Cycled through display options, still couldn't get viewfinder image. Checked images already on card, and they showed OK, so screen operating properly. Went back to viewfinder mode, got lots of horizontal lines across screen. Realised I could do no more, so took camera to shop it was bought from, who checked it and said it had an electronic problem that needed professional repair facility, so camera has gone for an estimate of repair cost.

Viewfinder has focus lever at bottom, please adjust viewfinder internal focus as per your eye sight looking on-screen display. Every thing will be fine after that.
