the lens inside the cd rom wil hav to be cleaned
then it wil detect
if the problem still remains then u have to replace the lens inside the cd rom

for cd roms u need not hav any driver once it is plugged
the cd rom automatically gets detected
so u just need to connect it

the only way to do this is to replace the cd drive with a dvd drive in the external case. Should be easy but probably cheaper to buy new external dvd drive.

You lost your boot disk or boot sector on your hard disk, check you hard disk are ok they may be crashed, replace it and reload new os
