I replaced the wick at the end of the last heating season. When I lit the heater this year, the flame is extremely uneven, one side is very high and the other very low. In addition, the heater produces a large amount of soot. As I turn the burner, the high part of the flame moves with it. I have taken the heater apart three times and see no obvious problem. The only other thing I can think of is that I accidentally bent either the burner or the part it rides on and this is casuing the problem.
Try emptying your heater of fuel,and lighting it letting burn for several hours. This will burn all of the deposits off of the wick. Make sure your heater is outside when you do this. when done lower the wick,fill with fuel,and let the wick soak for fifteen minutes before lighting.If this doesn't work try brushing the top of the wick a light brush of some sort and light.If still no luck,change the wick.

Either the wick was improperly installed or you may not have allowed enough time for the wick to soak in the kerosene and become evenly distributed. Check the placement of the new wick and allow time (several hours) for the wick to absorb the kerosene.
This can be caused by an uneven or worn wick. Replace the wick and make sure there is no debris in the wick channel as when you shut off the heater if a piece of wick or debris is sticking up it will smoke after shutting down untill it has cooled.
If the igniter lights the burners the ignitor..... is not bad. Its like a light bulb.... it works or ot doesn't.
You are describing a dirty flame sensor. Dishonest contractors will sell you a new ignitor but clean the flame sensor when the are installing the ignitor. It is located at the opposite end of the burners than the ignitor. It has one wire going to it. Remove it and clean the rod with a piece of fine grit sandpaper. this should be done every year before heating season.
I'm wondering the same
Should a duraheat, etc., cylindrical convetion heater's flame be bright yellow, blue , or what? With the old wick the flame was blue, with the catalytic converter glowing red hot. Now with the new wick, I can't even see the CC, because the flame burns a bright yellow. Also I have to really fine tune it now. A wee bit too high, I get smoke and soot. A wee bit too low, same...smoke and possibly flame out.
