Question about AEG Lavamat 16810 Front Load Washer/Dryer

Washing machine door lock problem

Hello, I have an intermittent door lock problem on an AEG Lavamat washing machine (70730 Update).  When selecting a programme, everything is fine, but after a few minutes' cycle, the green door lock LED goes out and the machine goes into standby mode and stops working.
I suppose it's a faulty door lock.  I've dismantled the front of the machine to have a look and I can't see what's wrong.  Any idea of how to dismantle the door lock ?
Thanks.

    Hello again,
No, I don't think the manual would help. I've already had a look at it. I've also dismanteled the door lock assembly, and now think that that has nothing to do with the problem.
Any ideas what might cause a washing machine to go on pause when in mid-cycle, without showing an E number ? When fiddling with the lock, I did get an E40 once or twice - I'm presuming that E40 means a problem with the door.
    Thanks

  • nesbitt808 Oct 03, 2008

    Hello again,
Thanks for confirming that E40 means a door problem, but what I'm trying to say is that I don't think it's the door mechanisme any more. The reason I think that is that I dismantled the door lock assembly and did a trial machine start holding the door lock in the locked position - the machine behaved as before - starting normally in every way, and just going into pause mode after a minute or two. At that time, the door lock mechanism was still in my hand and nothing moved - which makes me think that it's not the door lock mechanism.
The reason why I thought it might be the door lock mechanism is that when the washing machine malfunctions and goes into pause mode while in the middle of a cycle, the door LED switches off and the pause/start LED flashes red (instead of being a steady red). However, it could do this for some other reason too - some other part of the machine could be broken and the machine is simply not able to get past that part of the programme and so goes into pause.
Any idea of a problem which might come up about a minute or two into a cycle, which doesn't trigger and E number, but would make the machine to into pause ?
    Thanks.

Thanks, sweet_rascal, but as I say, I no longer think it's the door lock, and anyway it's a front-loading machine.

Hello, I'm still hot on the trail of my problem...

I've been told that one idea may be to reset the electronics of the 70730 Update. Can anybody tell me how to reset the machine ?

Alternatively, I'm told that every machine has a diagnostics code which will tell the machine to test every inside part and post the releveant error code. Anyone know what the diagnostics code for a 70730 Update is ?

Hello Mohammed387 and thanks for your help.  About the 16 digit code, where can I find it (I have not purchased any spare parts yet) and , more importantly, how do I introduce the code into the machine ?  There is no keyboard.

I'm still inclined to think that the fault is some part of the machine other than the main mother board.  That's why I need the diagnostic code to make the machine run auto-diagnostics.  This is usually initiated by pressing a selection of the buttons on the front panel.  Alternatively, I could try resetting the electronics, but I'll need to know what combination of buttons does this also.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

Thanks, Mediarich, I'm not sure if your idea will help, but I intend to look at the water intake and also the waste this afternoon.  I don't think it's the intake, though, as I can hear the water come in at the beginning of a programme - before the machine cuts out, that is ...

Hello everyone - I'm still hot on the trail, as the dirty washing is piling up...
Please note that this is about a top-loading AEG 70730 Update
I still haven't found the problem. However someone from AEG gave me the button combination to auto-diagnose the problem on my model. It didn't work out as he said it would, but I did get the code E55 for a second or two. Anyone knows what E55 means ?
    Thanks

  • nesbitt808 Oct 09, 2008

Hi - after listening to the motor (sounds like scratchy contacts) I was wondering if it could be anything to do with the motor brushes. Anyone know if an AEG still uses carbon motor brushes ?
    Thanks

  • nesbitt808 Oct 09, 2008

    Hi drcool299,
Thanks for trying to help. No, I've checked the button and it's not that.
No, now that I think of it, I'm really beginning to think it's something to do with the motor - like the brushes. The only thing is, I've had a look at the motor and I can't seen any brushes.
Can anybody tell me if an AEG 70730 Update has replacable motor brushes - and how to get at them ?
    Thanks

  • nesbitt808 Oct 10, 2008

    Hi Wiz,
Thanks for that, but no, I still don't think it's the door. I've already posted comments about my further discoveries, but there seems to be two windows with my problem. Anyway, the present situation is that I have obtained the diagnostic codes from AEG and have obtained the fault code E55. I'm not sure, but think this refers to worn carbon brushes on the motor. This would correspond to all the symptoms described also.
My present problem is how to get the old brushes off. I can hardly see them as they are at the back of the motor. Any help ?
    Thanks

  • nesbitt808 Oct 11, 2008

Hello VOTIT and all the experts,
No, it wasn't the door-latch. I just had a door error code when dismantling the door-latch to see if it was malfunctioning, which is hardly surprising.
The problem is solved. The E55 code corresponded to motor problems and from a slightly more scrapy sound from the motor I guessed it was the brushes. They have now been changed and everything works fine.
By the way, one shop was selling the brushes individually at ?28 without tax. The final place I got them was ?24 for a PAIR, including tax. How's about that ?
Now, seeing I solved my own problem - if you follow the thread of this page as well as the premium page where I started (I switched when I got no reply for over 2 hours) - you will see that I have solved the problem by myself without any help from the site, I have not accepted any solution. Does that mean I can keep my credit for another time ? How does the site work in that kind of case ?
    Thanks again.

Some times it finish the cicle and sometimes no, and My wife find the red LED Start/Pause. I tried to change the pressure on/off sensor, the NTC temperature sensor, the door lock block. The brushes are ok... so it need to check the analogic pressure sensor (How to do?) and the Main board :-(.

Just try to check the door latch device. Be sure that the latch is not bound or sticking in any way .This problem with a lot of machines and it almost always was the door lock latch assembly. It has a switch inside it that pauses or stops the cycle if the door is not closed properly, when this switch malfunctions then it will pause or stop the cycle repeatedly; just from the small movement of the wash cycle. The door will actually be shut all the way and the lock may be on. You must replaced this switch so it works normal again..

If you are manually holding the door latch it's the same as if the door is shut. You will need to jump out the latch not hold it shut. How ever if was the door latch it wouldn't start at all. There is a fill sensor that tells the machine when it is full. Once it signals the machine it's full of water it will proceed to the next cycle if not it Will wait for signal. If it is full and not going into agitate then there is a problem with either timer switch or program board. You've stated in previous comments that you don't think that this the problem but I've been doing appliance repair for 30 yrs. both domestically and commercially and there's not much else to them.

Have you tried the hard reset yet? Unplug the machine from the AC power source for about 2 hours, replug and try again.

Should that not work, try these:
1. Make sure you do not overload the machine
2. Check for any debris/lint/coins, etc that may be blocking the motor
3. Check the water inlet valve to ensure it is functioning correctly
4. The lid switch may be failing and requires replacement.
5. Wiring/control panel issues (control panel needs to be replaced)

Hope that helps!

Hello nesbit,

i think you could have a problem with the pause button, it is what it is doing, pausing the machine, un locking the door so that you can add clothes or what ever. could be that the button is triggering the signal while vibrating during wash cycle.

take a closer look at the buttons, feel if you have this clicking feeling that all buttons should have. compare the other buttons as you press them.

you might need a whole touch pad to replace if you will find the problem there.

tnx 4 using fixya,

those units uses ac motors and does not have carbon brushes.

when it pauses, can you bring it back to run as if you pauses it?
would it run normally again until it would pause by itself again?

    tnx, drcool

My washing machine stops running when there isn't sufficient water flow or the drain gets clogged. If the door interlock doesn't work it's worth a look.

You will need the instruction manual for this - it is not that easy the first time round. the code should be printed on a label on the old module so don't thow it away. code is 16 digits long from memory
e40 fault code is water level too low during heat which is very strange to appear at start-up. does anything else happen? without being certain, points to a main module fault

Hi,

E40 fault is a problem with your door interlock. You will have to re[place this part and the problem will be solved.Remove the panel beneath the door (2 or 3 screws). Reach up, there is a little "ring" beneath the door lock. Pull this down, it releases the mechanism.under the door there is a seam, there are 3 screws in that seam to remove to access that bottom panel..

Try:
Check your exit hose spigot, it may be clogged. This is if your filter is all clean. There should be air for passage in the standpipe behind. Your hose should not fit airtight into the standpipe and neither too deep into it. Snaking out your standpipe would be good too.
