Hi,
Opening the case
Use the following steps to open the case: WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer. CAUTION: This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a non-carpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (like a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

  1. Unplug all cables except for the power. Write down each cable location if you do not already know where it connects.
  2. Unplug the power cable and with the power cable removed press the Power button.
  3. Remove the screws on the rear of the desktop (Your PC case may appear different than the images in this document). Figure 1: Example of screws for the side panel want to add RAM - c00371471.jpg
  4. Slide the side panel off from the rear of the desktop. Figure 2: Removing the side panel
Thanks proton

What memory do I need?

Your machine has 4 DIMM slots. They use PC3200 (DDR400) DIMMS (184-pin). The machine comes pre-installed with 2, 256MB DIMMS providing 512MB of RAM. The largest DIMMs available in the DDR PC3200 are 1GB. If you keep what you have, you can add an additional 2GB of RAM, for a total of 2.5GB. If you are running WINXP 32-bit, this should be more than acceptable. You can replace all four DIMMS and get 4GB of RAM, but a 32-bit OS can only access a little of 3GB of RAM. If you want to come close to maxing out under a 32-bit OS, remove one of the installed DIMMS and add 3 1GB DIMMS. These are old memory and may be hard to find and actually cost more than newer memory.

What type of RAM required for Acer Aspire SA20

You need "PC3200 DDR SDRAM" memory. You will be able to add a 1GB module max or you can remove your old ram and put two 1GB modules which I recommend. Example: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3486310&CatId=1838

Blinking power led

Common error of RAM malfunction. Try changing the RAM, or upgrading to a bigger size. Ex; 1gb to 2gb or 1gb to 4gb. If the system you are using only operates on paired memory then make sure you get two of the same RAM cards.

Step by step
1. Shut down the PC and unplug.
2. Give the system about 1 min to completly powerdown.
3. Remove case cover.
4. Locate the RAM slots.
(Make sure you ground yourself by touching the case frame)
5. Remove the old RAM cards and install the new ones.
6. Place case cover back.
7. Plug system and power up.

(System should reboot with no problems)
Hope this helps

Thinking of buying old Compac Presario from brother in law, with 19" monitor. It is a 3400 AMD Athlon. What would you suggest is a fair price to pay. It was purchased in 2006 and is fine for my use.

Hi

See here for an idea of the 2nd User market price of this computer and its RAM Memory Modules:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_kw=PRESARIO&_kw=SR1475CL&_dmpt=Desktop_PCs

This specification of your brother's computer may seem okay for offline, single function-at-a-time computing functions, but will almost certainly be unbearably slow browsing on the internet, opening busy webpages, accessing the internet at peak times, downloading data and updates, multi-tasking and on functions like video streaaming.

No disrespect at all to him, but even at the time your brother brought this computer in 2006, there was better, faster Dual Core CPU and DDR2 RAM technology emerging and widely available.

You would almost certainly need to upgrade the RAM by removing the 512Mb stick installed (and then discarding it - almost nobody needs 512Mb RAM sticks now) and replacing it with 2 x 1Gb sticks.

Because 1Gb DDR RAM Memory Modules are a scarce commodity, no longer in production, much sought after by users with old, slow computers and highly prized and treasured by those who have managed to get their hands on some, there is a rapidly dwindling pool of supply and the price is relatively high.

When you add the cost of the computer and the RAM, you would probably be better off using the same money to buy a faster, more powerful, more up-to-date notebook, netbook, nettop or even a slightly more up-to-date, used Desktop that takes DDR2 RAM rather than the older, slower DDR RAM of your brother's computer.

The best outcome for both of you, would be for your brother to get the highest price he can for his computer from eBay or some similar site and for you to browse Amazon Market Place for the best, most up-to-date computer you can afford.

www.amazon.com > Amazon Market Place features reputable, trusted suppliers trading warrantied products under Amazon's oversight. Pay with a major credit card for further protection from your card issuer.

I hope this helps

I want to add 4GB of DDR3 memory, what further info to I need to know about the memory?

Newegg has a great site to find the correct and most compatible memory for you Here.
To maximize your ram speed, use the same speed and types of ram

For example, if you have a 1GB right now, add three more 1GB than putting in a 2GB and 1GB.
If you have a 4GB ram stick right now, add another 4GB and not 2x2GB. Also make sure the MHz on the ram is the same, (1333, 1600, 2000)

Enjoy upgrading your computer!

I want to increase th DDR in my emachines T2682. how much can i increase it and do i have to make any changes.?

Go to this trusted site I use all the time. http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx Click "Scan My System" accept the download of the scanner. When it finishes it will tell you what you have and what you can add, with the cost of all options. They have good prices and are very safe & reliable. From your model # unless changes have been made you have 256MB of Ram which is far to little for XP to run like it should. This is the bare minimum for XP. Buy and install at least 1 GB of RAM. It is a simple process and you will have to make no changes to the system. Once you install the new RAM and turn the computer back on it will recognize the new memory. Follow the directions for installing the Ram and make sure to wear a ground strap or ground yourself to the exterior of the case before touching anything inside. Crucial has a section on installing RAM which you should look at if you have never done it before. Your XP will fly with 1 GB of ram and this is the best money you can spend to make it faster. I checked their site using the model # your listed and you are in luck. You can purchase 1 GB of RAM, which they have on sale, for $38.99. You have 2 slots in your computer and you will be able to leave the 256 MB intact and add the 1 GB giving you 5 times the Ram you now have. You can see the results here. http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=T2682&pl=eMachines&cat=RAM

I have 4 banks of ram slots. Can I keep the Bank1 256k Bank2 256k. Can I put 1G into bank3.

It is strongly recommended that you install RAM in matched pairs. So if you add a 1GB module in bank 3 then you should add 1GB in bank 4
But you can add just the one module and it should work, but not at optimal speed.
