Several things you can try...first, if System Restore is enabled (not recommended because viruses love to eat and grow in there), boot into Safe Mode (F8 at startup). If you can get into safe mode, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore ...the SP update automatically creates a restore point before it begins (about the only thing that Microsoft actually got right!), and you should be able to select that restore point and go back to before you ran the update.

If that does not work, or you cannot get into safe mode, then you will need to run a Windows repair using your original Windows CD or factory recovery disc(s). Make sure to run a "repair", not a "clean install", else you will lose all your data. (if you don't care about saving data, I recommend a clean install).

If the repair doesn't work, your only real choice is to do a clean install, following the steps just above. However, you will lose all your documents, so if they are important to you, take your computer to a PC service tech or facility and have them backup your files first. It'll cost you, but probably not that much. I normally charge my clients $60/hr to backup their data, and usually it only takes about 30 minutes for 1-5GB of data.

After that (or without that), run the Windows "clean" install and you're back in business!

Hope this helps - remember to rate :)

Problem installing Vista SP1 on Asus G2s

If you tried to install Vista on the Primary drive and formatted the primary HDD your Factory Recovery Partition , most likely has been written over, it's gone. Choose one or the other , Vista or Win 7, start from the beginning, install a clean Vista load, formatting in the installation procedure, form a Vista Installation DVD, follow instructions, boot up, do ALL the Vista Updates, it will take hours of updates, rebooting, updates, rebooting. You will get to the Service Pack's 1 and 2, in 24 hours or so. Put on a pot of coffee and be patience. If you prefer Windows 7 use the same procedure.

Did you do ALL your windows update before the Service Pack? That SP has been out for years? Doesn't your laptop have Windows Updates set to Auto? Choose one or the other, Vista or Win 7 and do a Full Install.

Cannot get out of Configurating updates: stage 3 of 3 screen

This is all I could find:

It's not only Windows Vista Service Pack 1 that isn't ready for general consumer availability. Some of the updates released on February 12, 2008, as a part of the Microsoft monthly patch cycle, have managed to effectively kill Windows Vista. Users are reporting that, following the introduction of the February 12 updates, Vista gets stuck at the finalization of the deployment of the updates displaying the message "Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3 0% completes" and then entering
an infinite reboot loop. And there is absolutely no way out for the end users, because canceling the configuration process of the updates is a move equivalent to losing access to the operating system entirely. This will even happen in Safe Mode.

Microsoft has yet to officially respond to the issue, or to provide a resolve or at least a workaround. However, it does seem at this point that there is an issue with the deployment of the pre-requisite updates necessary for the smooth installation of Windows Vista SP1. Namely, the problem resides in the Vista installation software. The fact of the matter is that end users will have to first update the Vista installation software and only then deploy the remaining February 12 updates and only at the end Vista SP1 RTM.

If you are stuck watching the "Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3 0% complete Do not turn off Computer" and in the endless reboot loop, then stop the cycle and boot from the Vista media. You will need to "Repair your computer," so select your Vista installation and restore it to a point before the deployment of the updates. After gaining back access to your operating system, you will have to install the service stack update, namely Update for Windows Vista (KB937287). Deploy this update before any other on your Vista, and only then install the rest. At this point in time, you should experience no more problems.

"Update 937287 is a prerequisite package that contains updates to the Windows Vista installation software. The installation software is the component that handles the installation and the removal of software updates, language packs, optional Windows features, and service packs. Update 937287 is necessary to successfully install and to remove Windows Vista SP1 on all versions of Windows Vista," Microsoft revealed.

After installing vista service pack 1 my dvd rom is gone.

I would try stopping the device and restarting it first.

If that doesn't work, find the latest drivers for it, and have them in a folder you can find easily. In device manager, you can right click, go into properties for the DVD-ROM. Click the update drivers button, and point it to that directory.

If neither of those work ,try completely uninstalling it from device manager, then going through the add new hardware option in control panel.

Download the latest driver for dvd rom from Acer that will work with Vista SP1. Also try uninstalling the device in device manager and restart your computer. Vista may find "new hardware" and install the driver from its driver pack in SP1.

Acer Aspire 5630

Seems like your VISTA upgrade didn't sucessfully upgrade itself from XP to VISTA. Seems like M$ update program detects your OS as XP and tries to install the SP3 for XP. VISTA only has SP1 released. Its currently stuck in a loop that it doesn't know what to do. Restart your laptop into safe mode by pressing F8 before the VISTA loading page comes up and go to Safe mode and backup your data and use the ACER RESTORE CD OR ACER RESTORE METHOD to help you reload your system back to factory defaults then upgrade back to vista without install any updates or connecting it to the internet.

This is my best solution to get you out of this weird and unusual situation.
