Remove the iPhone SIM card trey and clean the connections on the SIM card as well as removing any dust from inside of the trey holder. Also ensure you have an active SIM card with your carrier. If all of these steps fail, you will need to contact Apple for a repair or exchange.

SOURCE: where to insert sim card in iphone 3gs

At the top of the iPhone you will see a small hole. Use a paperclip to push in the hole and the sim card try will pop out.

Put your sim card in the tray and put back in the iPhone

SOURCE: iPhone SIM Failure

The phone is locked to Apple and needs a Security code to unlock it.
When you place a new or a existing SIM card from another phone provider into your mobile phone and it asks for a Security code then :-
This phone is locked to the original mobile phone provider. You need to contact this mobile provider to ask for the unlock code (security code) for this phone. You need to provide proof of ownership etc and the phone's unique IMEI number which is located inside the phone under the battery. They use this number to generate the unlock code for your phone.
They should provide you with instructions on how to enter this code into the phone.
Once you unlock the phone, then you can insert a new SIM card in this phone or sign up with another phone provider using this phone.

You could ring the phone provider and ask for the unlock security code because you are going overseas and wish to use your phone with a prepaid SIM card from another country.
The other way to get your phone unlock is to use a phone unlocking company on the Internet, they usually charge a couple of Dollars for their services. Use Google and search for “Security unlocking code”.

You have to contact the network provider from whom the iPhone was initially. If the network provider doesn't provide an unlocking solution, You can try to get it unlocked from any private source. For example, you can visit MobileUnlockSolutions.com and get the remote unlocking service at low cost with an easy unlocking guide. Good luck.

I just activated a prepaid AT&T sim card in a cheap phone that I got at walmart. Once activated I put the sim card in my iPhone 3GS. For some reason it keeps saying mo service so I restored the phone and...

Your phone has a serial#,the IMEI.It's an anti-theft solution as well as a way for the manufacturer to not let you do exactly what you're trying to do,upgrade your phone without paying them.
When you activated the phone,it paired the Sim card# with the IMEI so that putting the card in a different phone won't work. That"s where "no service" comes from.
But go to the link, find your phone model and read the instructions on how to "unlock' the IMEI so you can use the new Sim.
