I have an Olympus U850SW camera which I purchased on board a Thompson cruise ship in the Medditeranian in April 2008 The battery is a rechargeable type but I am having difficulty recharging The camera will not switch on I am not sure if the battery may be fully charged and the camera is faulty or the battery is not being charged and therefore the camera is not getting the power it needs I seek your advice. Is there somewhere local I can take it to for an opinion I look forward toyour advice Sam Wilkinson

I have olympus u850sw camera. I took it into the sea and when I came out it wouldn't switch on. On further inspection looks like water had got inside the battery and usb port. Batteries are fully charged...

if water got in the camera, you might just be out of luck. but i know one thing you might be able to try. if you can take the camera apart , so that you can see inside of the camera without breaking anything, you can take a hairdryer and try to dry out the water. make sure that the blodryer isnt set on hot because you might damage the inside of the camera.

What type of Batteries does it use

Your camera can use two types of power either four AA's or two of the Olympus type CR-V3 batteries. If you don't have batteries for it now I'd suggest purchasing a four battery set with charger and an extra set of four rechargeable so you have a total of eight rechargeable batteries. That way you can be using a set of batteries while another set is on the charger.
Hers is a diagram of the battery set up for your camera.

Whenever I put batteries in the camera I can take a few pics then it says battery dead. Is it the memory card or batteries. Any ideas?

That is a common problem only solved by purchasing rechargeable batteries and a battery recharger. The flash on digital cameras use massive amounts of battery storage. If you do a lot then get about 8 batteries and a matching recharger.

Even with new batteries and they go dead before I take 3 pictures

Yes, there is definitely a fault with your camera.  You should be able to return it for a replacement.  I wouldn't experiment too much with batteries in this camera. batteries discharging this quickly are likely to overheat, causing unmentionable catastrophe.

How to recharge battery of Olympus FE-280 Digital Camera

When you purchased the camera, there should have been a charge in the box (you got a lithium-ion rechargable battery with the camera, no?). You put the battery in the charger and plug the charger in the wall.

Battery life expectancy

The battery life of AA alkaline batteries varies according to the manufacturer and power rating. Alkaline batteries can provide up to 100 shots with typical usage. Olympus NiMH batteries (B-01 4PE) provide approximately 250 shots per charge and can be recharged 300 to 500 times. Olympus recommends the use of CR-3V batteries or NiMH batteries. Olympus sells an NiMH Battery set which includes a charger and set of 4-NiMH batteries. You can purchase this through Olympus dealers or through the Olympus Emporium (www.olympusamerica.com/store).
