Question about Compaq PC Desktops

I have a Presario 1700T notebook. It freezes after 5 minutes of usage. I think it's heat related. How do I disassemble the laptop to replace the heatsink/fan?

After I opened 10 screws, I can separate the keyboard from the lower case for only about half inch. Are there more screws? If so, where? Also where do I look to see the "long" screw? Thanks, Wayne

A little more detail on my disassemble problem. I opened 10 screws (4 at the top, 3 middle & 3 bottom), the keyboard/palmrest still will not separate from the lower case. I don't see the "long" screw. More suggestions? Thanks, Wayne

Yes, to do that turn over your Laptop and let it relax on a well balance area then remove your battery slide out your hard drive and then use your appropriate Screwdriver and open the screws at the back then look to your long screw that comes out its meant for the Keyboard then turn over after loosing the screws then raise your keyboard a little about 45 degree then push it out at the back u will find a cord at the back so transparent be gentle when removing those part and target those place in case of puting them back then your palmrest pull-tab that is attached to the palm rest flex cable connector to remove it from the interface connector on the system board
Notice: Carefully separate the palm rest from the buttom case to avoid damage to the palm rest.then after making it open u see the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly then loosen the four captive screws that secure the processor then u have the thermal heat sink is with the processor remove it and make sure u add the cooling paste to ensure well cooling and replace as required u for open.
bye

Have you run any anti-virus programs? Inexplicably high CPU usage is a tell-tale sign of virus infection.
Computers do have fans in them in order to coll the CPU. If you don't have any viruses, it could indicate that your CPU is frequently overheating. You could need to replace it, or possibly

My friend has a Compaq presario f600 laptop & needs to replace the motherboard. What sort of motherboard would he need to get for it please?

I think I have the same laptop that also needs a motherboard. The Presario F600 also had a m/n of F572US found on the label with serial. Looking on the Compaq site I found the motherboard is the same as for the F500 notebooks which is 442875-001. Link is at: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01095493.pdf This number is also found under the memory chips on most Compaq/Hp Laptops. Simply open memory cover and remove the memory chips and there you will find the Motherboard replacement number. Good Luck!

My laptop freezes nearly every time I use it, and is slow to log on to the Internet

Okay, well that could mean a lot of things. First, of all how old is this laptop?..When was the last time you ran a disk cleanup?..Well the reason I asked you how old your laptop was, is because if your laptop is super old then, that's the reason why it is always freezing up. And I asked how long ago it was wen you ran a disk clean up, because in a lot of cases, when people's computers or laptops freeze up, is because they dont run disk clean ups often..and just let unnceccesary files continue to pile up on the computer. So if your computer is old and you never run disk clean ups this is why your laptop keeps freezing up. For example: an older person is walking along..and you give them a sack of potatoes to carry..ok obviously their going to walk slower..now every 5 minutes you give them another sack of potatoes. Wouldnt you think that the old person is going to have to stop every now and then and catch their breathe?. Ok, think of a computer like that. Well those are the two main things that came to my mind. Like I said, it could be a number of reasons your laptop is doing this. Hope this helps! :]

Help !!!!my laptop shuts down

We had some Acers do the exact same thing and we fixed them. I believe it shuts right off as a safety. Usually when the processor gets too hot it powers right off to save the laptop from burning up. First quick fix it to blow out the vents and especially blow out the heat sink vent. Also could be that the heat paste that sits between the CPU and Heat Sink could have dried up and stopped doing it's job to remove heat efficiently from the CPU. Big problem in earlier model Gateway laptops too. This can be fixed by acquiring some paste from a local tech shop and reapplying it. If you feel unsure about it, take it to a tech shop and they can do it quick for cheap if not for free. Keep me posted - Scotty
