New laptop, automatically connected to belkin54g, suddenly stopped working. please help!
Hi, i got a new laptop a couple of weeks ago with t-mobile usb modem stick on contract or a dongle as everyone calls them. the dongle did not give me very good connection but i did not mind as my laptop always automatically connected to a network called 'belkin54g'. i wasnt sure what this was but i was happy because it gave me faster internet. on sunday night it suddenly stopped working, my computer wont connect to any wireless networks. please help me because i'm really stuck and dont know what to do. im a total computer novice. would really appreciate some help :)
Re: new laptop, automatically connected to belkin54g,...
Well maybe you have to connect properly, fist of all i only know the windows vista version but go to .start, connect to, then a list of all available routers will appear, select yours (or the 1 your using). it will then ask you for a password, type it in. click connect. wait for it to load and there you go
i hope that helped

Boy o Boy, what a mess!! The easiest way to solve your problem is to take the work laptop and open up network connections and create a new connection. Follow through with the questions, and name it work computer to connect at home, or something like that, so you can differentiate the new connection. You probably log into a different domain at work, and starting to change all that will mess up your connection at work. So, a new connection is probably the easiest way out.
I had to restore my laptop to the manufature original settings. My belkin54g wireless router is showing up but it won't let me connect. When I go into network connections iw ould see Not connected firewalled. How can i fix this
Run the winsock fix.

Congratulations, as you have solved the problem by process of elimination and despite the fact that your question omits any details as to the identity of your router, and as you have stated, it simply does not work at this time.
This makes me think that the wireless in either the router or the laptop has failed. Will the laptop connect ok if at another hot spot? if so, then you may have a problem with the router. If the laptop will not connect when somewhere else, then the wireless in the laptop has a problem. that could be a problem with the internal wireless card, or a driver file corrupted. Check the wireless card through the device manager to see if windows reports it working properly, and make corrections there as may be necessary. If windows reports all is ok, you may need a new card.

You did mention that it was working fine for several weeks suddenly your wireless computers stopped functioning and your getting a message that the security key in incorrect. This only means that its either your entering the wrong encryption key or someone changed the previous security key to something else. By the way what type of wireless security did you configured on the router initially was it WEP or WPA, if its WEP(64 or 128 bit) and your using a bulit-in wireless adapter on your laptop you need the default WEP key because the passphrase only works with a Netgear WLAN Utility.
Know if your having difficulties accessing the setup page of the router you may need to check on your browser settings, turn off the pop up blocker and firewall temporarily, also try another computer. Now if all fails you may need to press that reset button on your router and set it up again.
