Question about Dryers

13 Answers

I would like a diagram of a Kelvinator 439 dryer which would have been manufactured in the 70's or 80's. I have purchased a new belt but can't work out how the spring and pulley are attached.

I requested a diagram in relation to a Kelvinator clothes dryer but that is not what was sent to me. I need a diagram of how the lower pulley is connected to the bottom of the system along with the spring and the belt.

  • lncbain Oct 07, 2008

Sure that solution that was posted has nice pictures of the pulley but it doesn't even mention the spring or how the pulley is attached and where it is attached. When the belt snaps it is obviously designed with the spring and the pulley to disengage for safety reasons so when I opened the dryer they obviously weren't in the positions they need to be and that is what I need to find out. How is the pulley ahich would include the spring attached to the Kelvinator dryer at the bottom near the motor. There are a couple of slits where it appears that the pulley slips into but when you attach the spring it pulls it straight out of the slits.

  • lncbain Oct 23, 2008

Could someone please solve this problem. All of the diagrams that have been provided are of no use and I found them myself on the internet. I need to find out how the pulley including the belt is attached. I am not very happy.

  • lncbain Oct 23, 2008

Scott that was not helpful. I am able to get inside the dryer but I do not know how the pulley system is attached to the dryer. Please advise I believe we need to find a diagram or video for a Kelvinator as stated.

  • lncbain Oct 23, 2008

The diagram is not inside the appliance.

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

Please supply a diagram of how the pulley is attached to the dryer.

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

That is exactly the photo I need for a Kelvinator 439 model. It is similar but still a little different.

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

wayneard - It appears to be the same as the one that has Kelvinator listed but this diagram still does not show me how to attach the pulley and spring to the dryer.

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

electech1 - The digram second from the bottom appears to be the same set-up as mine but I need to know how to attach the pulley and spring to the dryer which is not shown on the diagram.

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

    This diagram is not helpful

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

I have already pulled the dryer apart.

  • lncbain Oct 27, 2008

    electech1 - The model number is 5039-439-0

Hi,

if i may help, as you have stated that it is like the one in the kelvinator..
so here is the step by step procedure.

lay the belt on the drum and hanging near the motor.
now install the tensioner pulley on the motor as in the drawing.
then the spring should be pulling the bottom part of the tensioner towards the right.
then pull the pulley towards the right, the spring would be stretched, then put the belt under the motor pulley and on top of the tensioner pulley while being stretched to the right.
then slowly move the tensioner pulley to the left while the belt is on it's top.
then it will cathc the belt on top and make a tension out of it.
it is being pulled by the spring to hold it towards the left ( the pulley)

i hope that you can follow that.

tnx for using fixya,

drcool

Sears has a good repair site on the web. The model number must be entered and it has good pictures. Bacically those belts went over the top of the drum to a spring loaded tensioner pully on the front bottom right side then up to the motor pully and back up the right side. Remove the front panel of the dryer with a yellow handle nut driver or 3/16 socket to access the belt.

or if a modern type then this one

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

the pully is attached to the motor and the spring is on the motor then the spring attaches to the pully pulling the pully toward the motors shaft

    I'll look for better illustration

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

can you see the model # on the back off the dryer , not the model type but there is a model # somewhere on the back, I can't get illustrations without the model #

    EXAMPLE

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

ok this is the best i could do in a hurry

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

i have lokked and looked but your dryer is so old they don't have anything on it except parts

if you upload pictures of the motor in the dryer and the pully and spring , then i can manipulate the pictures to show you how they go on

otherwise there is no diagram available for that model as i'm sure you already have tried to search for one , so if you can upload pictures i can manipulate them to make them look like they are put together

sorry , but i have been looking for a long time , but i can't find anything , again only thing i can do is manipulate some pictures

    electech

  • jason Oct 28, 2008

do you see that the pully just hooks on to the motor , and the spring hooks to the end of the pully and then hooked to the bottom to pull tension on the belt

without the belt in place the pully and spring will just be loose

  • jason Oct 29, 2008

i believe you gave me a serial #

the model # will start with letters

Kelvinator Dryer Belt Diagrams and Replacement

Your dryer belt has broken and you have a new belt to install, but you do not know how to route the belt properly. Here are some pictures or diagrams to help you see how the belt needs to go. Of course the belt needs to go around the drum so that is not included.
The important part is the routing around the motor and the tensioner pulley.

!970- 1995 models use this diagram

Style: Flat with ribs
Installation Tips: Ribs face toward drum

1995 – present models use this diagram

HOW TO FIT A DRUM BELT ON A TUMBLE DRYER KELVINATOR

Normally you loosen the bolts to the motor after fitting the belt around the drum. DON'T try to streach the belt to fit over the motor pullery.

I tryed fixing my kenmore dryer but the belt is loose and i found what looks like a half moon type of pully

If you are talking about the idler pulley, which isn't a pulley at all, it is highly recommended that you replace it with a standard idler pulley. This was orginally designed as an attempt to save money by the manufacturer, but turned out to cause premature belt wear in many cases. A replacement idler assembly (part number 691366) is a better option. As far as reinstalling the dryer belt, you can find diagrams at repairclinic.com under the "Special Features" section under "Repair Help". There is a link for "Dryer Belt Diagrams". Your dryer is manufactured by Whirlpool. Your diagram will be either "H" or "K" depending on how the dryer is constructed. If your dryer has a removeable back panel, use "H". If dryer does not have a removeable back panel, use "K". HINT: Most dryers with removeable backs have the lint screen on the top of the dryer. If you need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.
