Hi!

Yes, you can use an external USB hub plug it to a working USB port. You can also use a PCMCIA USB card like this:

Good luck and have nice day!

Usb not recognising usb adapters

Try a different port or a port on a different section of your machine. USB controllers and USB ports can go bad from time to time. You can always add an external USB hub to any of your working hubs.
It could also be that whatever you're plugging in is not formatted correctly, or isn't powered on if it needs power. Also, try rebooting your machine to see if that fixes the recognition.

Why don't the usb ports work on the side of monitor

is there an extra cable, aside from the Power Cord, and the VGA Cable? if not, look on the back of the monitor, there should be a similar plug in like a USB printer would have, its kinda square. If there is, you just need a USB printer cable to make it work.

New Dell desktop can't recognize external hard drive

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

I have a 320 Western Digital external drive. It works fine if I plug it directly into the computer usb drive. HOwever, I want to use it thru a hub cause it is difficult to get to the back of my computer. ...

Does your External drive have a seperate power supply? Or does it get its power through the USB port.

If it gets its power from the USB port then by adding a hub you are essentially dividing the amount of power supplied by the number of ports extended.

One possible solution that could solve that situation would be to get what is called a powered hub. Which is exactly as the name suggests. The Hub has an external power supply so that it can provide even power to all of the ports.

I hope this helps
If not please post an update and I can try to find a better solution
If you need more help please post what Model of WD ext drive you have (ie....My book, Elements, Passport etc...)

Thanks,
Dave

My philips external harddrive (SDE3271) (250Gb)when we try and install the drive it keeps coming up with power surge on the USB hub port. It also keeps on beeping.

the power required by the DRIVE is not there,
so connect it directy to your cpu, or use a hub which also have a power option
