<p>The power nozzle brush roll bearings could be locking up from hair and debris wrapped around them. If that is the case, then the brush roll will be hard to turn and will cause the belt to heat up and give a burning smell. The belt looses it tensile strength (tightness) over time. But it's the part about funny sounds and shutting down that concerns me. If it smells like a tire fire then it's the belt if it smells like plastic and burned hair then the motor has a bad field or armature. Probably one of the carbon brushes got hung up and burned a segment in the armature.
