IBM T-40 Thinkpad Stopped Working

The first thing that started happening was that the screen would go black with the computer on. I had to restart the computer and it would boot up fine. But after using it for a little bit the same thing would happen.

Next I noticed that if you pushed down too hard where your palms rest when you're typing, the screen would black out. It would work as long as I was very careful not to move the laptop around too much. It had to be an a solid table. Eventually it wouldn't turn on at all.

I just tried it again (it's been sitting for months) and it booted up. I was working for a little while. I pushed down on it to see what would happen. The computer froze up and when I restart it, the monitor stays black.

As I remember the problem I was having before a little more clearly, the main thing that I remember it doing was that the computer screen would freeze, and I'd have to reboot it. In my latest use it froze up and now there is no picture on the screen at all.

IBM's are famous for this ...that's why they've changed their keyboard configurations so frequently, because palm pressure would either a) prematurely damage the hard drive or b) cause problems with the AC/DC card (IBM's term, not mine).

My guess, since I used to repair IBM laptops for a living, is the AC/DC card. It directly controls video output to the LCD. You can probably find one "pulled" on eBay for around $50, and probably $50-100 for someone to install it for you.

Hope this helps - remember to rate! :)

My IBM THINKPAD T42 screen turns to black after 30 to 40 seconds when i turn it on.

This indicates a hard drive problem, have it tested to confirm, because the hardware may need to be replaced. First try and reload windows with cd installation disc if that does not work the hard drive must be suspect.

Today when I was using my IBM Thinkpad R51 the screen went black and the machine shut itself down. It restarted normally but after about 20 minutes did the same thing. I never got a warning or any kind...

your battery could be failing, thats the most obvious thing. Then you might have accidentaly set the sleep mode,if you have this facility in your software(most pc's do).you must just search through your soft to see if you have enabled this function--good luck!

Display went black and now computer will not do anything

it guess there is problem with battery backup to the laptop( maybe just worn out with use and needs to be replaced ) ... it is contantly charging the battery and it not able to power the display of laptop since you said hard disk led was glowing when the computer boots up... are you getting any messages or beeps as the computer boots up ... this would help in troubleshooting . another thing would be to check up power adapter it may have developed a fault.

My Screen Is Black When I turn the Laptop On

When you say ?it turns on fine? I?m assuming that the power and hard drive LEDs turn on. If that is the case it could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. With the computer on and the monitor power LED green shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. This is usually an economically repairable problem but not for the typical home user. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this posting.
