Have you checked the drain filter inside the wash compartment ? If that gets clogged up with food by products, the water cannot get to the pump to be removed to your house drain. Since you did not provide a brand and model, I cannot tell you exactly where that filter is but is normally located near the lowest point of your wash cabinet. Hope that helps..

Whirlpool gold dishwasher will turn on but not clean dishes

If it looks like the water is circulating then it's possible that soap build up can cause cleaning problems. Try taking a cereal bowl and filling it with an 8 oz bottle of apple cider vinegar (you want apple cider for the citric acid and you want to put in a bowl because the 1st thing a dishwasher does is drain) then put the bowl on the lower rack and wash nothing but the bowl of vinegar. We have found that the new non phosphate soap is also causing problems we have found that Finish tablets work very well and since they are pre-packaged then there is no risk of too much soap causing problems. If that doesn't help then it's possible that the motor is not turning the spray arm at a high enough speed to circulate the water. Hope this helps.

Asko 1996 appears "dead".....no lights flashing, won't respond to repeatedly pushing on/off button. Some water left in the bottom...siphoned it out, cleaned filters, no blockage there. Almost like it's...

Don't know if this will help, but my dishwasher has a "propeller" device above the top and bottom racks that spins while dispensing the water. If the dishes on either rack are stacked too high (i.e. if even one plate comes in contact with that propeller, keeping it from spinning properly) the dishwasher will go through its full cycle but will not use the soap (soap door will still be closed and soap packet still intact) and will not get the dishes clean.
However, it sounds like you either have a bit of a drain issue as well--or perhaps your dishwasher acts the same way as mine (if that's the case) but ceases to drain as well if blocked.

Maytag dishwasher not draining fully

Try cleaning out the air gap.  The air gap is not part of the machine, and is located on your sink. If this becomes clogged, it may cause the machine to not drain properly.  Also, I know you said you checked the drain hose and cleaned as far as the filter and chopper blade, but have you checked the lower filter?  There is a filter located underneath the machine that should periodically be cleaned.  To check this, you need to access the machine from underneath by removing the bottom vanity cover. Hope that one of these helps!

Whirlpool Dishwasher won't drain during normal cycle

As you say a clogged line or valve does not make sense.

Try running it without the heated drying and see if it empties or if the cancel button will work then.

The dishes should air dry quickly if you empty it and open the door.

It could be a defective thermostat allowing it to get too hot during the heat cycle

Hello Ramona Doug,
Try disconnecting power from your dishwasher for a few minutes to clear the memory and then reapply power again. Start a wash cycle without dishes on the hottest water setting and after a few minutes.. pause the wash and add a few cups of white vinegar to the wash water.,. that will help break up deposits in the system.. See if that gets you going properly.

Sounds like the drain is clogged, so the dirty water is not draining and the dishwasher won't cycle because if it did it would overflow (causing a mess). So I would suggest trying to remove the obstruction (could be food or a utensil, etc.... at the drain hole or in the hose itself ). I am pretty sure once you clear the blockage that your machine will operate normally again. You may have to unplug it (for a few minutes) after clearing the blockage to let it reset to default.
