Thats not what you do.. I tried that and almost broke my $500 player... I finally found the booklet what it says to do is hold the power button till it says reset and this will turn off the blu ray... When the blu ray shuts off push the open/close button... It will open up in a few mins... That disk you put in was probley not readable.. Hope that helps

Look below the bd/dvd door where you load your disks you will fine a tine hole there. Find a narrow screwdriver around 4 to 5 inches and poke it into the hole there is a mechanical lever that will release the tray assy and unchuck your disks without damage to it.

Won't read newly released blueray dvd's, Ithe model I have is BD-HP20U with version HU7103100. Do I need new firmware?

No firmware is available yet. In the meantime follow these directions for a possible work around...

You need to force the player to the the Top Menu of the disc.
The way to do this is: load disc, wait until it says "Reading Completed" (about 1 minute).

Wait for the PLAY icon ">" to show in the upper right corner (this may take up to 30-40 secs).

Once you see the ">" Hit the STOP button on the remote to get to the player's splash screen.

From the Sharp splash screen Hit the "Top Menu/Title List" button on the remote and wait for the circulating dots and then the disc menu appears.
Play the movie from the menu and you should be good to go.

Australia and new zealand DVD playes usually are region 4 only this means the DVD is probably imported. You will need a multizone DVD player to watch it.

Incompatible Disc in Sharp BD-HP21X Blu-Ray Disc Player

I had the exact same problem as you did... I bought the Sharp Aquos 42D85X which came with Sharp BD-HP21X Blu-ray Disc player. could not get brand new blu-ray movies to play and i found it froze everytime after 10 secs. I phoned sharp who basically were no help watsoever! I then went and returned my blu-ray movies back to the store thinking it was a problem with the discs.. The people there were extremely nice and since they had a display model of the BD-HP21X instore they offered to test the movie on it to veroify whether it was the blu-ray player was the problem or not. Turns out its a fault with all of the BD-HP21X models. So we then ended up returning it back to the store we bought it and exchanged it with the older model (BD-HP20X). I now have no problems playing blu-ray movies. Although another suggestion is to perhaps download the lastest firmware update & see if that resolves your issues.

Sharp BD-HP20U Had been working fine, until today tried number of disk both blu-ray and dvd in and during disk reading process an error msg comes up incompatible disk

I have the same problem. I started several months ago with brand new blueray disks. Now even disks that worked before, now come up as incompatible disks. I have tried contacting support thru their website and never getting a response. Not even the automated response about how blueray is always changing. No firmware upgrades since 10-29-08. I will never purchase any sharp products again. And I would advise anyone considering it, dont. What a waste of money.

I have a BD-HP20U Blu-ray disc player. I have downloaded the software update but the player will not recognize the file on the USB device. I have followed the directions very closely and have re-tried...

I had the same experience, trying several different USB sticks with different capacities to see if it would make a difference.

What DID make a difference was resetting the BD-HP20U to factory settings, and THEN installing the update from the USB stick. This time, the unit recognized the file on the USB device and installed the update.
