Now my computer does not even recognize that I have a Labtec LCS-1060 speaker attached. In the Control panel, in sounds & audio devices, it says no audio device is connected. This failure happened only...

I would use system restore to put the lost stuff back onto your computer. Then if it puts back the unwanted software be more careful about removing it.

Is the sound card in built, as the coputer says no sound card fitted or am I just missing a driver.

the drivers might have been corrupted by something or you might have got a virus run your antivrus program and test for a virus then
you might have to uninstall then reinstall either the sound drivers or the sound card make sure you have both of these devices baked up to a disc before uninstalling
a yellow? question mark means you need to install/update driver right click to install driver
as for the sound
control panel sounds and audio, volume you can adjust the volume or advanced, speakers select appropriate speakers or audio you will find 3 drop down lists make sure you have selected the right speakers or control panel, administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll to sound, video and game cotrollers could be a yellow question mark? right click to re-install drivers
hope this helps
