PC Shutting Down Randomly

I am completely baffled as to what is wrong with my PC. With no warning at all, it will just shut down at random. There seems to be no real pattern to the problem, other than it tends to do it when I am doing something which requires processing i.e. rendering sound files to disk, or burning a CD. But it is not just restricted to this type of action. The problem is strangely intermittent, sometimes I can go a while without it happening, then once it has happened it will take several reboots before I can get up and running again as it keeps shutting down before it gets through the POST. Because it is also falling over before it gets to Windows I am strongly inclined to think that it is a hardware error, perhaps the memory. Can anyone offer any advice and/or recommend a good set of hardware diagnostic utils?

FYI, my hardware is as follows

Intel 'Prescott' Processor
512MB Crucial RAM
ASUS motherboard
Antec case & PSU

Any help would be much appreciated

do you have a good system cooling inside your computer? do you have an intake and an exhaust fan, pulling air in and the other pulling air out?

hmm....you can go into the bios of your computer and disable the feature that shuts down the comp when the temps get a bit high. this wont solve your problem though, i recommend probably getting a better cooling solution so the computer parts wont get too hot.

depending on the age of your pc it could be that the thermal paste which sits between heatsink/processor is worn off its about a fiver for a tube delivered. If not not it could be your psu if 1 of the rails has gone especially if you have a dedicated graphics card i'd try the paste first though
