Question about LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini, 500 GB Hard Disk Drive with Gigabit Ethernet & USB 2.0 Interface, 7200 rpm... IDE Hard Drive

Lacie 500gb external drive

I am running two 500gb external drives off my media 100 edit.
Trouble is one of the drives refuses to appear on the desktop, or indeed mount.
I have had problems over the past week, but eventually it did start with persistance!
From cold, the drive makes all sorts of creaking noises, then after about fourty minutes it spins up; but the blue ligh continues flashing and the drive doesn't appear on the desk top.
The drive sounds normal but the blue flashing light suggests something isn't.
Can anyone help?
Yours hopefully
Mike

    Thanks r for your help.

The drive does actually start up and spin away merrily, after a while. But the blue light keeps flashing and the drive doesn't mount on the desk-top.

Is there a problem with the drive motherboard, usb port..?

Anyone had a similar problem and managed to remedy the problem?

    Yours hopefully

    Mike

The disks inside the HD are not spining. The creaking noise is the HD trying to start. Next time when it does start transfer all the files ASAP cause your drive is about to die.

Right click "My Computer" and select Manage. In the window, select Disk Management on the left column. If the drive is not listed on the right column, then the BIOS has not detected the harddrive - it might have a harddrive password lock. You will need to go into the BIOS and unlock it with the password.

Check your BIOS > StartUp sequence
Maybe the USB boot option has much higher priority that HDD boot. Try exchanging their priority and then reboot, with your external HD connected to pc.

XP doesn't recognize 500GB external Lacie after almost 2 years

try it on different usb ports on your system
try replacing the cable which connects the hard drive with the usb port
if this does not works the problem lies in the portable hard drive and i think it would be under warranty period so get it checked

Microsoft has had some issues in regard to external devices (especially after running some updates). There is a registry patch for this situation. Click below to install the patch. It should fix your external drive problem. All the best!

External hard drive

500Gb Lacie D2 Quadra with the same problem of flashing led and not mounting on the desktop (Mac G4 Mirror), traced to the power supply (57w) going down on power, both 12v and 5v supplies are available but the main power to run the drive drops to below an adequate output, hence the clicking and whirring evident from the drive with simultaneous flashing led.

Testing with another Lacie power supply (250Gb D2) this time a 34w unit got the drive up and running, however, and this is the reason for this post, this lower power PSU failed a week later whilst waiting for a warranty replacement from Lacie (5 weeks and still waiting for the new PSU from them. they have no stock)

Message for all Lacie D2 users, check the power supplies first, test with another Lacie PSU, do not run the drive on a lower rating (34w) PSU it will fry it and leave you with another failed power supply.

If you are in a tight spot use the temporary power supply to move your data to another drive and get the correct 57w power supply before running the drive again.

Don't do as I did assume any Lacie power supply will run any Lacie hard drive, they won't, fortunately I had a second back up, but am 2 drives down and no new PSU's available to buy anywhere.

Try and purchase another spare 57w power supply, something all D2 users should do for long term security, as these do not seem to be very reliable and getting warranty support from Lacie on these is currently impossible.

The lack of 57w power supplies from Lacie and its distributors across the world is surely a warning to be noted!!!!!!

Buyers beware!
