I had the same problem and this worked. Hope it helps.
If you can check mark the unit then your driver is working. Check down near your clock, on the bottom bar. See if the mute is on. If so then double click the speaker icon and bring up the audio properties box. check to make sure your volumes are up, on the sliders and there is no mute on. Yuo probably have already checked these, but just going through the motions. If still nothing, plug the speakers into a radio, cd player, mp3 player etc..to see if the speakers are working. If all else fails, unload the Realtek drivers and re-install.

This document pertains to HP or Compaq PCs with an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connector for connecting a monitor or TV.
If you use HDMI to connect your display, you must activate HDMI sound by adjusting your Windows settings .
If HDMI is not activated, you cannot hear any sound. Because of this, HP recommends that you connect analog speakers to the computer to hear sound during the initial setup of the computer.
Use the following steps to activate HDMI sound on your computer:
If you ever perform an HP system recovery, you must repeat this procedure to activate sound for the HDMI connector.
Right-click the Volume icon by the time in the lower-right corner.
Click Playback Devices .
The Sound window opens.
On the Playback tab, click Digital Output Device (HDMI) if it is listed. If it is not listed, click Realtek HDMI Output .
Figure 1: Digital Output Device (HDMI) selectionFigure 2: Realtek HDMI Output selection
Click Set Default .
Click Apply .
If you used Digital Output Device (HDMI) , click OK to close the window. This completes the steps to activate HDMI sound.
If you used Realtek HDMI Output , continue with Step 6.
Double-click Realtek HDMI Output .
The Realtek Digital Output Properties window opens.
Click the Supported Formats tab.
Place a check in the 48.0 KHz check box, and make sure that there are no checks in the Dolby Digital check box and all other check boxes.

For most TVs to play back audio, the sample rate must be 48.0 KHz.
if using XP, go to start control panel , sound and audio devices.Under the audio tab make sure the C Media CM106 sound device is selected under sound playback. Then under the volume tab set the volume somewhere in the middle or at the top if you don;t have active speakers . Then Under Speaker settings advanced, make sure the speaker setup is set to Laptop Stereo speakers. Also make sure the speaker volumes are up on the speaker volume button. click ok. If no result check that the cm106 sound decvice was cemented in as I saw it dissaper when I thought i had slected it. I think the key thing here is the device and the laptop speakers setting.
I have speaker problem no sound but I know its there because when I turn on volume can hear it turn on it was working before my computer is hooked up to magicjack for my telephone different area code then where I live and the other day when I picked up reciver to make a call could hear my speakers on my phone assastance asap PLEASE
please check if you have drivers installed for your sound device and if your sound device is working fine. please try following steps, go to start--run--type devmgmt.msc--device manager window will open-- check if u see any yellow mark in front of sound devices
even if you dont see any yellow mark. please go on drivers and download page on hp website. please put your model number in there. If you need any help please let me know i can send you the link for this. download sound device drivers. most of the time HP use realtek ac97 or realtek high defination drivers. it could be different one too. if you are unable to get it from HP website you can download it from realtek.com too
last step : if other steps does't work :
go to start--run--type services.msc ---go to window audio -- if service is stopped for some reason please start it manually by pressing start
It is not an issue with the speakers or the sound card as you get sound in media player and also while playing cd's.
It could be the volume settings on the player tht the websites use to play the audio or the video,
